The Captain delivers in the shootout, Rangers are rolling on the road.
Columbus, OH- The New York Rangers came to the capital of Ohio as they faced the Columbus Blue Jackets at Nationwide Arena. After taking down the Tampa Bay Lightning with seven goals, they knew they had a better opponent in the Blue Jackets. This one went the distance as the Rangers took it all the way to the shootout and defeated their hosts by a final score of two to one.
Shesterkin stopped the penalty shot
The Blue Jackets went on a two-on-one as Miles Wood received the pass in the slot. Taylor Raddysh came from behind and slashed him, which caused Wood to crash into the net, and he was awarded a penalty shot by the referee. After crashing into the far post, Wood took the penalty shot, but was stopped by Shesterkin at 16:19 of the first period.
Zibanejad scores on the power play
Three times the Blue Jackets tried to clear the zone, and all three times Adam Fox kept the puck in at the Blue Line. Then, from the near point, he passed the puck to Artemi Panarin at the far point, saw Mika Zibanejad near the far post. Made the hard pass to Zibanejad as his original shot was saved, but got the rebound and flipped it over the shoulder of the goalie at 5:42 of the second period on the power play.
Blue Jackets tied the game on the power play
The Blue Jackets were cycling the puck near the blue line to prepare for a shot. As Kirill Marchenko found Zach Werenski at the far boards. He ripped a shot that was saved by Shesterkin, but the rebound was toward his right a bit, and the long arms of Dmitri Voronkov were able to get his stick on the loose puck and slide it in at 15:20 of the second period on the power play.
Shootout winner
No goals in the third period, and none in overtime as both teams were ready to battle in the shootout. The Blue Jackets missed their first two penalty shots until Vincent Trocheck took the lead in the second round. When the third round began, the Blue Jackets tied it from Marchenko, but in the back end, Captain J.T. Miller scored the winner, and the Rangers got their second point in the game.
Rangers are road warriors
The Rangers, in their first 11 games, are 9-1-1 with 17 points. They have been fabulous away from Madison Square Garden, and once again, their defensive game helped them earn a point and finish the job in the shootout. Igor Shesterkin made 24 saves out of 25 shots on goal. They have played well.
“I thought we played a complete game all night long. You know, that’s a good team we played against; they’ve got a lot of young talent. They’re fast. They got a real good transition game. They’re one of the best teams in the league off the rush, you know, they lead the league with Scoring goals from their defensemen.
We knew that was that was going to be important aspect of the game and I thought for the most part we played on top Of them most of the night, you know, I thought they had a little pushback They got a light they got some life when they scored on their power play But five on five I thought for the most part You know was a pretty solid effort Obviously, this is an art to stabilizing a game,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan
