Florham Park, NJ- What looked like a quiet trade deadline day for the New York Jets General Manager, Darren Mougey, made a big deal deal sending Cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Indianapolis Colts for two first-round picks and Wide Receiver Adonai Mitchel. The news was reported by Jeremy Bergman of NFL.com
What the Jets are getting
The Jets received two first-round picks for the 2026 and 2027 NFL Drafts, and Wide Receiver Adonai Mitchell. Now, for the next two drafts, they will have two first-round picks. With the acquisition of Mitchell, the hope is that he can be the number two receiver next to Garrett Wilson.
Sauce Gardner’s Jets tenure
Drafted 4th overall in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Sauce Gardner came with Wide Receiver Garrett Wilson and Edge Rusher Jermaine Johnson. Won the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year award, and the Jets recently gave Gardner a four-year $120.4 million deal and taking his fifth-year option.
This season, Gardner played seven of the eight games of the 2025 season with six pass defended, 20 total tackles. Through three and a half seasons, Gardner played 55 games with three interceptions and a league high 20 pass deflections as a rookie.
The current record put them in this position
After earning their first win of the 2025 season, and currently at 1-7, the Jets decided to tear it down and send away their top corner. A player who was supposed to be a part of the future is now in the past. While the draft picks are a positive, the reality is that the Jets gave away a young talent like Sauce Gardner and helped the Colts cement first place in the AFC South.
