Sloppy start, better ending, but it ends in a draw
Davie, FL- After suffering their first loss of the season, Fort Lauderdale United headed back home to Beyond Bancard Field to face a desperate Brooklyn FC side that was desperate to score goals and desperate to get three points. After 90 minutes had been played, this match ended in a one-goal draw as both sides shared the points.
Sloppy play gave the visitors the early lead
A terrible start to the match for Fort Lauderdale United when they failed to control the ball and made poor passes to each other. That led to a giveaway by the home side, and the ball was then picked up by Rebecca Cooke. She attacked the net and scored in the 10th minute for the early lead.
Brooklyn FC hasn’t scored a first half goal this season, and that moment finally came in South Florida. A strong start for the women who play in Coney Island, and they were feeling good.
The Equalizer came on a bounce
Fort Lauderdale United earned a free kick along the near side touch line. Stella Nyamekye prepared the free kick as she sent a long looping ball inside the area. The ball had eyes as it bounced twice toward the far post, but running out of nowhere was Kelli Van Treeck as she slid into the ball and tucked it inside the far post at the 39th minute.
Ended the match down to ten women again
The back end of the match was a bit of concern as Taylor Smith was sent off on double yellows, then the red card came out. Her first Yellow was in the 86th minute with a hard foul. But when six minutes of second half stoppage time were announced, Smith was shown her second yellow card in the third minute of six. A foul from behind, and she will miss the next match against Carolina Ascent on November 8th.
Backup keeper was strong and solid
Haley Craig got her first start of the season as starting goalkeeper Bella Hara was suspended due to the straight red card she earned away at Lexington SC in the five goals to one loss. Craig, while, did concede a goal, but it wasn’t by her doing, stood tall inside her area and helped to secure a point. She should be proud of how she stood tall and played a great match.
Fort Lauderdale United’s next match is on the road against Carolina Ascent at the American Legion Memorial Stadium on Saturday, November 8th, at 7:00 PM. You can watch the match on WPLG Local Channel 10 or stream live on NBC’s Peacock
