The South Florida Club continues its good start with a strong road performance at Coney Island
Brooklyn, NY- Fort Lauderdale United traveled to the northeast, facing their next opponent, Brooklyn FC. They played a strong match as they dominated the Coney Island side for the entire 90 minutes. After the final whistle blew, Fort Lauderdale United took home the full three points as they won the match by a final score of two goals to one.
An early goal inside the first ten minutes.
Fort Lauderdale was given a free kick as Brooklyn’s Alice Barbieri committed the foul on her marker and was issued a yellow card. Stella Nyamekye stood at the ball just outside the Brooklyn area, delivered a fabulous free kick to the front post, and scored the goal to take the lead in the 9th minute.
Late goal puts FTL ahead by two
Fort Lauderdale scored late inside first half stoppage time as Lily Nabet attacked with the ball at the far side. She saw Kiara Locklear in front of her and made the pass to spring her. Locklear drove to the net, cut to her right, avoiding the keeper, and scored into an open net for the two goal lead.
Brooklyn pulls one back late
Brooklyn FC earned a corner late in the second half. Jessica Garziano delivered the ball into the area, and running toward it was Hope Breslin with a snap header to pull one back and make the attempt to save a point in the 87th minute.
Emily Riggins of St. John’s University, who was with Garziano in college, was excited to see her former teammate perform on the professional level. “Yeah, I’m actually going to the game tomorrow, she (Garziano) is also one of my really good friends, and she’s been a big sister to me since I came into St. John’s. I just want to say, Jess, that I wish you the absolute best. I’m cheering you on no matter where it is, from near or far, and all the best.”
Ali Rogers’ first win as head coach
The newly appointed head coach, Ali Rogers, she earned her first win this season. After a season and a quarter as the Associate head coach, she earned her first win of her career, and she should be very proud of how her squad handled their opponents in this away match.
“It always feels good to get three points on the road. Definitely battled to the end, made it a little more challenging than what it should have been, but it truly doesn’t feel like my first win. We’ve gained a lot of consistency within this group, but it’s not easy to do after a bye week. I’m really proud of the girls and how they came out today,” said Rogers.
With this victory, Fort Lauderdale United have shot to the top of the USL Gainbridge Super League with 11 points, and they still have two games in hand on fourth place Spokane Zephrys, a game in hand on both Dallas Trinity and Lexington SC.
Fort Lauderdale United’s next match is the Florida State Derby as they travel to face the defending Gainbridge Super League Champions, Tampa Bay Sun, at Suncoast Credit Union Field at 7:30 PM EDT. You can watch the match on NBC’s Peacock or locally at WPLG Channel 10.
