Early Celebrations, but not enough to get the win
New York, NY- The New York Rangers came home after a fantastic road win against the Montreal Canadiens, now they took on the Minnesota Wild, as they attempt to finaly score and earn their first win at home, but sadly one of the two happened as the Rangers fall to the Wild by a final of three to one.
The goal horn has finally sounded off
Inside the opening minute of the first period the Rangers quickly attacked the Wild’s zone. Will Cuylle skated behind the net toward the near corner. He lost the puck, but Mika Zibanejad retreived the puck, gave a bit of a blind pass to a wide open Artemi Panarin and scored at 57 seconds of the first period.
What significants does Panarin’s goal mean?
The Rangers avoided an old record that was set in the 1928-29 season, by not scoring a goal at home in consecutive games. A former NHL team that was orignally called the Pittsburgh Pirates, which the Penguins wore a jersey during the 2023 Winter Classic to honor that former team.
The record still stands at 187 minutes and 19 seconds. This current goal less streak at home by the Rangers is officially at 180 minutes and 57 seconds.
The Wild tied the game
The face off was inside the Rangers zone and in the near faceoff circle. Joel Eriksson Ek won the faceoff, allowing Matt Boldy to skate in behind Eriksson Ek, and made the pass to the far point at Jonas Brodin. As he skated in, Brodin took a hard shot that deflected off the stick of Alexis Lafreniere and then the left arm of Shesterkin and into the net at 5:10 of the first period.
The Wild Take the lead for good
After winning the faceoff at the far side circle, Marcus Johansson took the puck and skated around the boards, then tried a wraparound that was stopped by Shesterkin. But somehow the puck wasn’t covered under his pads and Danila Yurov picked it up, as he pulled it out and flipped it in at 8:16 of the third period.
Empty Net and four straight home loss
The Rangers pulled Igor Shesterkin for the extra attacker, but it wasn’t meant ot be as Kirill Kaprizov scored the empty net goal at 18:24 of the third period to give the Wild the victory. While the Rangers did score their first goal at home, this is their fourth straight loss to start their home portion of the schedule, and now it’s geting to be a bit more frustrating not to win on home ice.
“We scored early, which was great, but I thought we got outplayed. We got outplayed all night. This wasn’t nearly the game that we’d been putting on the ice, game in and game out. And you know, we knew we were going to play a team that was going to come in with urgency based on circumstance. And we didn’t match that. That was the challenge. We got outplayed tonight.
It comes down to puck battles. They were quicker to, they were harder on pucks you know It’s hard to have success when you know when you’re on the wrong side of those puck battles A lot of times it’s going to decide who has possession It’s going to decide where the game’s going to be played territorially And I just didn’t think I thought you know they were quicker to pucks and they were harder on We weren’t good enough tonight” said Michael Sullivan
ARTEMI PANARIN: scored in a second-straight game. He has points in five-straight games against the Wild and has scored a goal in four of his last five against them.
MIKA ZIBANEJAD: Tallied an assist on the Rangers first goal by Artemi Panarin, surpassing Steve Vickers for the 10th most assists (341) in franchise history.
