MONTCLAIR, NJ — New York Red Bulls II delivered a dominant performance at home against Carolina Core FC on Saturday, dismantling their opponent 5-1 to secure advancement to the Eastern Conference Semifinals. The Baby Bulls were ruthless in the opening stages, scoring twice in the first 36 minutes and never looking back in a commanding display of attacking prowess and defensive organization.
The victory showcased the depth and quality of the Red Bulls’ academy system, with multiple players stepping up to deliver clinical finishing and creative play throughout the 90 minutes. Red Bulls II Head Coach Michael Bradley’s side controlled the tempo from kickoff, establishing dominance that Carolina Core FC could never overcome.
Early Onslaught Sets the Tone
RBNY II wasted no time asserting their superiority. In the third minute, Rafael Mosquera converted from the penalty spot, firing a left-footed shot to the middle left corner to give the hosts an early 1-0 lead. The penalty came after Daniel Chica fouled Roald Mitchell in the opening moments, setting a physical tone that Carolina Core would struggle to match throughout the first half.
The Baby Bulls continued to press, and their pressure paid dividends in the 34th minute when Nehuén Benedetti doubled the advantage. Mitchell provided the assist, finding Benedetti with a precise pass from the right side of the box. Benedetti’s right-footed finish to the central zone made it 2-0 and suggested the floodgates were about to open.
Carolina Core offered little resistance in the opening stages, with their defensive shape repeatedly broken down by RBNY II’s fluid passing and intelligent movement. By halftime, the Baby Bulls had registered 18 shots to Carolina Core’s 5, establishing complete control of the match.
Second-Half Onslaught
If the first half was dominant, the second half was devastating. RBNY II came out of the break with renewed intensity, and the goals came in rapid succession.
In the 47th minute, just 60 seconds after the restart, Roald Mitchell made it 3-0 with a right-footed finish from the left half-space outside the box. Matthew Dos Santos provided the assist, continuing RBNY II’s pattern of clinical finishing.
One minute later, in the 48th minute, Benedetti struck again to make it 4-0. This time, Nate Worth provided the assist, with Andy Rojas credited with a second assist on the play. Benedetti’s second goal of the match—a right-footed shot to the bottom left corner—underscored his importance to the Baby Bulls’ attacking setup.
The onslaught continued in the 66th minute when Mijahir Jiménez added a fifth goal, extending RBNY II’s lead to 5-0. The Baby Bulls had scored four goals in just 19 minutes of the second half, a display of attacking efficiency that left Carolina Core’s defense in tatters.
Rafael Mosquera capped off a strong individual performance with his second goal of the match in the 80th minute. Adri Mehmeti provided the assist, and Mosquera’s left-footed finish to the central bottom zone made it 5-0.
Late Consolation
Carolina Core finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Glory Nzingo scored a consolation goal. Anthony Sumo Jr. provided the assist, giving the visitors a measure of respectability on the scoreline. However, the goal did little to diminish RBNY II’s commanding performance.
Standout Performances
Nehuén Benedetti was the standout performer for the Baby Bulls, recording two goals and demonstrating the technical quality and movement that defines the Red Bulls academy. His positioning in the box and finishing were clinical throughout the match. After the game, Benedetti reflected on his performance with characteristic humility: “Really happy for that. I am so happy. But again, it is of the team because they played really well. They helped me all the time on the pitch.”
Rafael Mosquera also impressed with two goals and a penalty conversion, showcasing his versatility as a wide player and his composure in front of goal. Roald Mitchell’s goal and assist highlighted his importance to the team’s attacking play, while Matthew Dos Santos and Nate Worth provided crucial creativity in midfield and defense.
For Carolina Core, the defensive frailties were evident from the opening moments. Despite efforts from Facundo Canete and Paul Leonardi to disrupt RBNY II’s rhythm, the visitors’ backline was repeatedly exposed by the Baby Bulls’ intelligent movement and passing.
Statistical Dominance
The statistics told the story of a one-sided affair. RBNY II registered 18 shots to Carolina Core’s 5, with 8 shots on target compared to 2 for the visitors. The Baby Bulls’ passing accuracy of 89.3% compared to Carolina Core’s 74.5% demonstrated their superior control of the match.
RBNY II completed 597 passes to Carolina Core’s 263, controlling possession and dictating the tempo throughout. The Baby Bulls’ defensive organization was also evident, with only one goalkeeper save required compared to three for Carolina Core’s Alex Sutton.
Bradley on Playoff Readiness and Team Maturity
Head Coach Michael Bradley was pleased with his team’s composure and execution in the high-pressure playoff environment. “We’re really excited,” Bradley said after the match. “Played pretty well, got off to a really good start, scored some really good goals. I thought our mix of our football ideas, when we needed to go faster and try to create chances, when we needed to slow things down and control the game with the ball, mixed with our intensity, our pressing—I thought a lot of that was really good.”
When asked about how his young squad handled the increased physicality and intensity of playoff football, Bradley emphasized their tactical maturity: “I thought we handled the night in a really mature way. Obviously, it’s a big game. The lights come on a little brighter; there’s a little more at stake. So I thought, again, just in terms of our understanding of how to play the game, how to compete, how to manage moments, how to not get caught up in some of that stuff, I thought was all really good.”

Bradley was particularly impressed with RBNY II’s wide play, highlighting the relationships between his attacking players. “When you talk about the wide areas, the relationships and the understanding on both sides—on the right side, Rafa and Mina and Nevi, and then on the left side, Maddie Dos Santos and Andy and Nate Worth—that part’s really important for us in terms of when we play out there, how we can threaten, how we can control, how we can find different ways to be dangerous out there.”
The coach also praised the depth of his attacking options, noting that multiple players contributed to the dominant performance: “Look, the way that we play, Roald, Jiménez, Tanner, Rafa, Andy, Dennis Nelich—like all attacking players. Some play a little bit more down the center, others play a little bit wider, but when you talk about the best teams, they have attacking players who are dangerous and can score goals. So we’re really happy for Roald. He had a really good night; he put a lot into it, scored an excellent goal.”
Mitchell’s Perspective on Playoff Momentum
Forward Roald Mitchell, who scored and assisted in the dominant victory, spoke about the team’s confidence heading into the postseason. “This past week of training has been excellent,” Mitchell said. “Everyone’s been bought into it. Everybody’s just been locked in for the most part. But I think we just go far and probably win it, hopefully.”
Mitchell credited the chemistry among RBNY II’s attacking players as a key factor in their offensive dominance: “It’s awesome because you know you’re probably definitely gonna—one of us is definitely gonna get. Just understanding each other is probably the best part. Just gotta understand each other throughout the whole game and we get the results that we needed.”
When asked about his approach against Carolina Core’s defense, Mitchell highlighted his ability to create space and exploit one-on-one opportunities: “They were pretty tight to me. So I mean I think it’s good that I just kind of created space for myself and created opportunities for myself. Getting off them, getting off the back shoulder, running them behind—it’s getting us more individual 1v1 battles. I think that was the best part for me.”
Mitchell also emphasized the team’s composure in managing the physical nature of playoff football: “I think it’s important for us to just be calm in those situations because some calls can go your way. But I think we managed it well, and we managed our emotions too.”
Looking Ahead
With the victory, Red Bulls II advance to the Eastern Conference Semifinals, where they will face a new challenge in the postseason. The Baby Bulls’ dominant performance against Carolina Core suggests they have the attacking firepower and tactical discipline to compete at the next level.
Bradley emphasized that the victory was a reinforcement of the team’s work and mentality rather than a statement to the rest of the bracket: “A message for ourselves, reinforcement for our work, reinforcement for the mentality and the commitment every day for how we train for all of our ideas. And so again, it’s for us. What the others think, what the others see, what the others do, we don’t worry much about that.”
As RBNY II prepares for their semifinal matchup, Mitchell’s message was simple: “I think we just keep that same intensity, same training, same runs and tactics.” With performances like Saturday’s on display, the Baby Bulls have every reason to believe they can continue their playoff run with the same clinical efficiency and tactical discipline that dismantled Carolina Core.
