The season ends with a loss on the road in Columbus
Columbus, OH- The New York Red Bulls finished their 2025 season visiting the Columbus Crew at Lower.com Field. The hope was to have a positive feeling in their final match of the season, but instead, the Red Bulls suffered another loss as they dropped their final match by a final score of three goals to one.
Choupo-Moting finished his season with a goal
Red Bulls were in midfield, controlling the ball. Gustav Breggren headed down to his countryman Emil Forsberg at the near side, saw Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, and crossed the ball toward him. Choupo-Moting took his shot one time and smashed it inside the back post in the 11th minute.
The Crew equalized
At the far side touchline, Max Arfsten has the ball and makes the pass to Lassi Lappalainen. He turned on the speed and attacked, made the long, low pass to a wide-open Andres Herrera down the near side, and scored short side for the equalizer in the 16th minute.
The Crew takes the lead
Arfsten was just outside the area at the near side, then made a pass to a moving Taha Habroune. He got toward the end line when he saw Daniel Gazdag wide open inside the middle of the area. Gazdag made the quick turnaround shot and beat John McCarthy in the 66th minute.
The end of the season
Poor communication once again struck the Red Bulls when McCarthy received the ball from Kyle Duncan. He was trying to return the ball to Duncan, but Kyle moved a bit too far, which allowed Ibrahim Aliyu to steal it and score an easy tally in the 84th minute.
That type of play has cost the Red Bulls all season long. Mental errors on almost every single moment they needed to either get an equalizer or the win late in the match. But it’s all over, and the season is done.
“In the first 45 minutes, we had a lot of good situations, especially in the opponent’s half, when we win the ball, but we have to create more from these situations to come into the opponent’s box. And then the second half was the situation, how we conceded the second goal, and then it was too easy. Then in these moments, we are losing the ball, and so in a dangerous space, losing the ball, then we are not aggressive on the side, then it’s too easy.
How we conceded the second goal and the third goal. Okay, this is then a buildup situation, individual point. But at the end, I think everyone could see it today, the output in the final third, in the opponent’s half. It’s not good enough. At the end, this is clear, the message from the whole season, what we can see.
And also, then in some moments, the soccer IQ, this is necessary for individual players to read the situation, not always, to have the reaction. So after two, three, four, five seconds, or more, to read the situation, and then to go forward, then to defend forward, and this was the part from the second half, and this is the reason why we lost this game today, and also the reason that we missed the playoffs this season,” said Sandro Schwarz
