Snakebit at the Garden again, as a great performance doesn’t get rewarded
New York, NY-The New York Rangers returned to Madison Square Garden to face the two-time Stanley Cup Runners-up, the Edmonton Oilers. It was another fantastic performance from the Rangers, skating hard, playing defense, and taking multiple shots, but it was great goaltending that stopped the Rangers as the Oilers won the game two to nothing.
Linesman interference helps the Oilers
The Rangers had possession of the puck and wanted to break out toward the Oilers’ zone. Urho Vaakanainen at center ice was trying to pass the puck to enter the zone, but at the far boards, the puck hit the linesman, then ricocheted toward Kasperi Kapanen. Quick pass to Trent Frederic, breaking free, then snapping on between Shesterkin’s pads at 10:22 of the second period.
Another Empty Net
The Rangers pressured with the extra man inside the final two minutes of the third period, but they lost the puck at the near boards. Andrew Mangiapane dug it out and gave it to Connor McDavid. Then he led Adam Henrique skating down the rink to score the empty net at 18:52.
Goaltending was fantastic again
Igor Shesterkin and Stuart Skinner put on another clinic of fantastic goaltending at Madison Square Garden. Pad Saves, Gloves Saves, getting some luck from the posts, but unfortunately, Shesterkin gave up the lone goal in play. Shesterkin made 20 saves out of 21 shots on goal, while Skinner made all 30 saves.
Three game home losing streak
In this weird start at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers have lost their first three home games and were shut out in all three games. Out of the six goals they allowed, threeSnakebit of them have come from an empty net. This is a new record, and unfortunately, the Rangers have created it.
“The message was that, you know, we have to make sure that we don’t get discouraged because there’s a lot to like, with our game over the last six periods. You know, I feel like, we’re controlling play, we’re controlling territory, we’re limiting shots, excuse me, shots and scoring chances.
We’re generating a fair amount on our own at the other end of the rink. I think when you look at, you know, our power play five on five, some of our most talented guys are getting really good, high-quality looks, and the puck hasn’t gone in the net. And so, you know, you can’t always control whether the puck was in the net or it doesn’t, but I think if we just stay with it and we don’t get discouraged, we just get determined here.
We’re going to be okay. I think, you know, in this early part of the season, our coaching staff has really liked how the group has come together. I think we’re getting stingier defensively, which is an important aspect, I think, for our team moving forward. Uh, if we continue to generate quality scoring chances at the rate that we’re doing, I believe that they’re going to go in the net. I think our players are too talented. I just think we’re, right now, where it’s just been a struggle finding the back of the net,” said Mike Sullivan.
The Rangers will now take an Eastern Canada road trip as they will face the Toronto Maple Leafs on Thursday, October 16th, then Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday, October 18th, at the Montreal Canadiens.
