A late goal in the second half gives the US Men’s National Team a draw
Austin, TX- A strong match for the US Men’s National Team as they battled hard against Ecuador. Handled the pressure from their opponents, and they attacked well when they had the ball. After their 90 minutes, the match ended in a one goal draw at the Q2 Stadium in the capital of Texas.
Ecuador scored the opener
Ecuador moved the ball toward the center circle of the midfield, as John Yeboah made a brilliant pass to spring Enner Valencia. He caught Chris Richards, who had his back toward Valencia, and off to the races they went. Richards was just a step behind as Valencia slammed the ball hard inside the far post in the 24th minute.
Balogun is hard at work and finally converts
Folarin Balogun was very active in this match. He made runs, took shots, and forced the goalkeeper to make difficult saves. Finally, he got on the scoresheet. Tanner Tessman at the top of the area made a quick pass to the near side to Malik Tillman. Once Tillman received the ball, Balogun made a run to the near post.
Tillman made the pass into the space for Balogun, and he shot it off the inside of the near post and completely over the goal line to get the equalizer in the 71st minute.
Matt Freese is flying in the air
A big moment for Matt Freese, preventing a goal from happening, allowing Ecuador to regain the lead. As the ball was going down the pitch along the near side, a big cross toward the middle of the area, as the New England Revolution striker Leo Campana wanted to streak in for a header chance, but Matt Freese read the play and made a diving two-handed grab to prevent it from happening in the 77th minute.
Pochettino was happy with the performance
U.S. Men’s National Team Mauricio Pochettino enjoyed the performance of his players, and they showed they can challenge a top side like Ecuador, depending on who they will be drawn with at the World Cup this coming December.
“After going down a goal, we know how difficult Ecuador is to break down, you know, even at 0-0. So, you know, what did you think of how the team responded after that? I think they were so happy. I think the response was very good. I think we keep playing in the way that we plan to play. I think there are too many positive things that are really important to prove.
Playing against a team like Ecuador is important because I think they are so competitive, and for us, it’s helping us to evolve and to develop, you know, in the way that we want to. I think it was a very good game. I really enjoyed the game, despite the way that we conceded in the only chance that we conceded in the first half.
The performance was very serious, very professional, and I think we need to improve in some details. But I think that is the way, in the way that we want to compete, and in the way that we want to show our performance, and in the way that I think our fans are happy, you know, to show that passion and compete in the way that we compete today,” Said Mauricio Pochettino.
