Undisciplined and fumble-happy Jets are now in the basement of the AFC East
Miami, FL- The New York Jets traveled down to South Beach to face the Miami Dolphins and avoid a fourth straight loss, but the same problems continue to rear their ugly head as poor penalties, poor defense, and getting stripped three times as the Jets go to 0-4, losing by a final of 24-13
Fumbles killed the Jets
After an amazing opening drive, Braelon Allen tried to dive for the endzone, but as he was halfway in the air, the ball was punched out of his hands. Justin Fields, in the second quarter, was strip-sacked and lost the ball. But on the opening kickoff return in the third quarter, Isaiah Williams was getting tackled and stripped at the same time to give the Dolphins the ball back.
Poor playcalling again
As Aaron Glenn has been honest and demanding of a head coach, he continues to make questionable decisions at crucial times in the game. Down 10-0 in the second quarter, the down and distance was 4th & 5 at the 50yd line. Instead of making the field goal or punting the ball, he goes for it, and Fields was sacked and stripped of the ball.
His two minute drill in the back end of the 1st half, Glenn had two timeouts left and allowed the clock to tick away before he finally used one of them inside 30 seconds remaining in the first half. While he has done a few good things, he’s been poor on his play calling and decision making in his first four games of his first season as a head coach.
Defense continuing to leak yards
Steve Wilks’ Defense continues to play poorly. Poor tackling, blown coverages, and allowing themselves to play undisciplined to give Miami every opportunity to score points. While they did improve toward the fourth quarter, it’s just not enough to earn the win.
Penalties are killing the Jets
More undisciplined penalties were created by the Jets with pre-snap calls for false start, or illegal shifts, but the worst of the worst was from Kiko Mauigoa on defense on third down as Tua Tagovialoa was giving himself up, short of the first down marker, and received a left hand shot to his helmet that gave the Dolphins a first down.
Justin Fields with one positive play
In the third quarter, on a 4th and 1 play, Fields tried a fake handoff, almost got sacked, but went on a big run for a 43yd rushing touchdown, avoiding tackles and getting help from his defenders. While it was a brilliant play, this offense has lost its magic since week one against the Steelers.
No wins in September
For the first time in three seasons, the Jets haven’t won a game in September. In the rookie season of Sauce Gardner, Garrett Wilson, Breece Hall, and Jermaine Johnson, the Jets were able to earn a win in that miraculous comeback win at the Cleveland Browns in 2022, then the overtime winner on opening night against the Bills, and last year on the road at the Tennessee Titans.
