Justin Fields won’t suit up against the Buccaneers as he is diagnosed with a concussion
Florham Park, NJ- The New York Jets announced to the media that Justin Fields will be out for their road game against the Buccaneers, suffering from a concussion against the Buffalo Bills, midway through the fourth quarter. Backup Quarterback Tyrod Taylor will start in place of Fields, while Brady Cook will be elevated from the practice squad.
Fields hit his head hard at MetLife
It was a sack attempt by Joey Bosa, forcing Fields to throw the ball away. As he was being taken down, Fields’ head landed hard on the field turf at MetLife Stadium. He entered the medical tent behind the bench, then was taken to the locker room for more tests. “When it comes to injuries, one person that I can just say outright now would be Justin. He’s still going through his protocol, so he’ll be out,” said Aaron Glenn.
Tyrod Taylor gets the start
The 36-year-old veteran, who has been a starting quarterback in the NFL, is no stranger to being under center and calling plays. He started his career with the Buffalo Bills and played with other teams like the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers, Houston Texans, and the New York Giants. Started 58 out of 95 games, so he knows what to do in these situations.
“He’s been around a long time. What gives you confidence in him standing against Justin? Well, it’s no different than what I said earlier in the week when you guys asked me about him, the possibility of him playing. Yes, I have competed against him a number of times. There’s an element within him that we also have in Justin that I like a lot. And the fact that he’s been in this league for a long time, there’s no coverage, there’s no pressure that he hasn’t seen. So that’s why I have confidence in him. And he’s a very studious person. Good athlete. Again, been around this league for a long time. There’s no better player that you would want as your backup quarterback than him at this point. It seems like wherever he goes, he’s really popular amongst the kids,” said Glenn.
Tyrod Taylor is ready to answer the call
Without a doubt, Tyrod Taylor has been through the block as a backup quarterback in the late stage of his career. He’s done that with the New York Giants two years ago when Daniel Jones was injured and had to take over against the Jets. He knows what to do now that Fields is out during concussion protocol.
“Yeah, obviously, you’re always one player away, especially as a You never know when that opportunity will present itself. And back in 2011, when I got drafted, I tried to challenge myself to have the same mindset. That was the first time that I had to sit. I started as a freshman in high school, started early in, but I challenged myself each and every day to prepare like a starter because you never know when an opportunity will present itself. Like I said, the main thing is you don’t want to obviously let your team down, but you want to prove to yourself. That you’re capable of doing what you know you can do,“ said Taylor.
