ATLANTA, Ga. — Baker Mayfield and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers survived a fourth-quarter thriller, defeating the Atlanta Falcons 23-20 in a dramatic NFC South opener at Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sunday.
The victory marked a statement win for Tampa Bay in what head coach Todd Bowles called a “bizarre” but crucial divisional victory to start the season.
First Half: Trading Blows
The game opened with the Falcon’s showcasing their offensive capabilities. The Faclons struck first with a methodical drive capped by a B.Robinson for 50 yards touchdown reception. The Buccaneers had no answers in the first quarter, however, in the second quater they got a Field goal on their first drive of the quarter and then followed it up with a B.Mayfield pass deep left to E.Egbuka for a 30 yard touchdown reception to take their first lead of the game 10-7. The Falcons would kick a Field goal from 41 yards out to tie the game (10-10) before halftime.
Rookie quarterback Michael Penix Jr., making his first NFL start, showed poise beyond his years in the opening quarter. Falcons offensive lineman Jake Matthews praised his young signal-caller’s performance: “Yeah, I thought he played like an absolute stud. Just his determination and the way he leads us offensively and what he showed today, I think he’s going to continue to do really good things for us.”
Second Half: Mayfield Takes Control
The turning point came in the third quarter when Mayfield began extending plays with his legs, creating opportunities that the Falcons defense couldn’t contain.
Falcons safety Jessie Bates III acknowledged Mayfield’s impact: “Baker’s a gamer, got a lot of respect for him. Usually when things aren’t going well for offense, quarterbacks start getting a little bit more antsy; they want to start making plays, and that’s what Baker does. He extends plays and he’s able to use his feet and keep some drives going for them.”
Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles emphasized Mayfield’s decision-making under pressure: “I think the faster the game speeds up, the calmer he is. He understands what he has to do, who he has to get it to. He can see when DBs are cheating, and he’s calm under pressure.”

Fourth Quarter Drama
The final quarter featured multiple lead changes and crucial plays that defined the outcome. Penix Jr. led a remarkable 90-yard touchdown drive that temporarily gave Atlanta the lead, showcasing the composure that impressed his teammates.
“He had a QB one type of performance,” Bates said of Penix. “He’s our quarterback for a reason, and when there’s tough plays that have to be made, he’s touching the ball every single play, and we got complete trust in what he’s able to do.”
The Decisive Moments
With the game on the line, Mayfield delivered when it mattered most. His scrambling ability proved crucial in key third-down situations, as he explained: “When they play man coverage and do a good job of actually guarding it, that means free lanes for me. Nobody’s accounting for me unless they have a spy, which they didn’t. So just trying to take advantage of that.”
The Falcons had their chances, including a missed field goal attempt that proved costly. Head coach Raheem Morris didn’t make excuses: “He missed it. I’m not gonna sit here and pretend I could tell you about the technique of what happened with that miss, but we gotta make those kicks. And those are very makeable kicks.”
Missed Opportunities Haunt Atlanta
The Falcons’ defense created several opportunities but failed to capitalize on key moments. One anonymous Falcons defender reflected on the missed chances: “On defense, we had a lot of opportunities at the ball. Dropped them. And those determine the impact of the game at the end. So the outcome with us just making plays when they’re there, that’s what we got to do.”
Bates echoed this sentiment: “I think I’m proud of what we displayed out there, and we’ll be alright. We’re going to go back in, see what it is, and come together as all 11 and set a pretty good identity today, but just build on it from here.”
Coaching Perspectives
Bowles praised his quarterback’s overall performance: “He played with so much poise. Obviously, the stat sheet didn’t light up for him, but managing and winning the game and doing what he had to do to win, he did everything that way and I’m proud of him.”
Morris, despite the loss, remained positive about his rookie quarterback: “I can’t say enough positive things about him. Him going out there and not turning the football over, getting us to the right read, the right protections, throwing the ball in the right areas, making the right plays at the right times. I mean, he was lights out and we gotta help that kid win the game today.”
Team Chemistry and Support
The Falcons showed strong team unity, particularly in supporting their struggling kicker. When asked about confidence in Younghoe Koo, one player responded: “100. You know he’s a pro’s pro, and he’s got as many big moments in the last 5-6 years as anybody. And so we have full belief in him, and I do too. So we’re gonna get it done. It’s a long season, and we’re gonna get it right.”
Looking Ahead
For Tampa Bay, the victory provides early momentum in what promises to be a competitive NFC South race. Bowles emphasized the significance: “It’s always good to get the first weekend. It doesn’t weigh in until you play a couple more games and see where you fall in toward the end of the season. But it’s always great to get a division win.”
The Falcons, despite the disappointment, showed maturity in handling the setback. Matthews captured the team’s mindset: “I think it just kind of comes with being a pro. You got to understand one game can’t make you; at the same time, it can’t break you. Take our lumps, learn from it… we got a huge matchup next week that we got to be ready for.”
Mayfield reflected on the victory with respect for his opponents: “We remember the fact they beat us twice last year, but it’s a new season. We wanted to know what the goal was coming in here – beating a divisional opponent on the road, and any way we can do it is great.”
Statistical Breakdown
The game featured 43 total points and multiple lead changes, with both quarterbacks showing different strengths. Mayfield’s mobility proved decisive, while Penix Jr.’s poise under pressure impressed observers.
Morris acknowledged the competitive nature: “Typical Tampa Bay Buccaneers-Falcons game going out to the wire. Obviously, we’d like to have a couple of those things back, whether it be a kick, whether it be a possession.”
As both teams prepare for their next challenges, this opener served as a reminder of the competitive balance in the NFC South and the importance of execution in crucial moments.
