Championship crowning delayed until Monday as incoming swell promises epic conditions at Tavarua’s world-class left-hand barrel
Cloudbreak, Fiji — The surfing world’s ultimate showdown faces a weather-induced delay as the 2025 Lexus WSL Finals Fiji Presented by Corona Cero awaits the arrival of a promising swell system. With flat conditions and strong onshore winds currently battering Cloudbreak, event organizers have placed competition on standby until Monday, September 1, when forecasters predict the arrival of championship-worthy surf.
The delay only heightens anticipation for what could be one of the most spectacular Finals in WSL history, with conditions pointing toward the legendary Restaurants break — a wave many consider the closest natural equivalent to a perfect wave pool.
Patience Rewarded with Perfection
“We’re going to put the competition on standby until Monday, September 1,” announced Renato Hickel, WSL VP of Tours and Competition. “The main reason is it’s a flat ocean out there with very strong onshore winds and rain at Cloudbreak.”
However, the forecast tells a dramatically different story for early next week. “The first possible Yellow Alert day in the event window will be September 1st, when the new swell starts to arrive in Fiji in the four-to-six foot, maybe five-to-seven foot range,” Hickel explained. “The swell forecast for September 2nd is currently in a 10-to-15-foot range with a short period and W angle. It’s showing to be a good swell for the Restaurants reef.”
Restaurants: Where Legends Are Made
The potential shift to Restaurants has the surfing world buzzing with excitement. Situated directly in front of Tavarua Island Resort’s dining area, this world-class left-hand barrel breaks over an extremely shallow coral reef, creating long, hollow waves that wrap around the island with mechanical precision.
The wave’s legendary status was cemented during its last Championship Tour appearances. In 2013, the men’s event at Restaurants produced an incredible 11 excellent heat totals in a single day, topped by three-time World Champion John John Florence’s near-perfect 19.80 two-wave combination, which included a perfect 10-point ride.
Current Final 5 competitor Jordy Smith (RSA) also dominated that historic day, posting an 18.30 heat total of his own. The women’s 2014 event was equally spectacular, with four surfers achieving excellent totals out of just six heats, including two from Bianca Buitendag.
Championship Matchups Set
While nature determines the timing, the Finals format guarantees drama. The women’s competition opens with a clash between 2023 World Champion Caroline Marks (USA) and breakout star Bettylou Sakura Johnson (HAW), who claimed her first two CT victories this season at the Gold Coast and Trestles.
The winner advances to face 2024 World Champion Caitlin Simmers (USA), with the ultimate prize being a shot at current World No. 1 Molly Picklum (AUS) in the Title Match.
The men’s bracket features an equally compelling narrative, with 2019 World Champion Italo Ferreira (BRA) facing Jack Robinson (AUS) in the opening match. Robinson leads their head-to-head record 4-3 and will be seeking his maiden world title after four consecutive Finals appearances.
The winner of that match faces Griffin Colapinto (USA), with the victor earning a shot at Jordy Smith (RSA) before a potential Title Match against current World No. 1 Yago Dora (BRA).
Final Preparations Continue
Despite the delay, the Final 5 surfers will have ample preparation time. A practice session featuring all 10 competitors will be broadcast live on WorldSurfLeague.com on Friday, August 29, at 8:00 AM GMT+12.
The next official call comes Monday, September 1, at 7:30 AM GMT+12, when organizers will determine whether to issue a Yellow Alert for competition within 24 hours.
Fantasy and Fan Engagement
WSL Fantasy Pick ‘Em for the Finals is now open at ctfantasy.worldsurfleague.com, offering fans one final chance to test their surfing knowledge against the world’s best. The modified bracket challenge awards points for correctly predicting match winners across both men’s and women’s competitions.
The Wait Builds Anticipation
As the surfing world holds its collective breath, the delay only adds to the mystique surrounding what promises to be an epic conclusion to the 2025 Championship Tour season. With Restaurants potentially providing the stage and the world’s top 10 surfers ready to perform, the 2025 WSL Finals could deliver the kind of surfing perfection that defines careers and creates legends.
The competition window remains open through September 4, ensuring organizers can select the absolute best conditions for crowning the 2025 World Champions.
