QS 4,000 event sees wild conditions, early upsets, and schedule disruptions at Playa de Pantin
Playa de Pantin, Galicia, Spain — The 2025 ABANCA Pantin Classic Galicia Pro kicked off with a dramatic display of nature’s power, as massive six-to-eight-foot surf and stormy weather battered competitors and forced organizers to cut the opening day short. The World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 4,000 event, renowned for its challenging Atlantic conditions, lived up to its reputation as closeout sets and unpredictable weather made for a wild start.
Heats Halted by Heavy Surf
Excitement was high as surfers arrived at Playa de Pantin, greeted by booming sets and an electric atmosphere. But the same energy that fueled competitors also complicated the schedule. Only five heats of the men’s Round of 112 were completed before organizers called off the rest of the day’s action for safety and fairness. The next call for competition is set for Wednesday, August 27, at 8:00 a.m. GMT+2, with hopes of resuming both the men’s Round of 112 and Round of 96. The women’s event will remain on hold for another day.
Early Standouts in Challenging Conditions
Despite the chaos, several surfers managed to shine. Germany’s Lenni Jensen set the tone in the opening heat, putting together two solid rides to edge out Spain’s Marco Marin. The highlight of the day came from Yoav Sommer (WRL), who notched the highest heat total so far—an impressive 13.17 out of 20—thanks to a committed approach and a pair of high-scoring waves (7.17 and 6.00). Sommer’s performance showed that even in unruly surf, opportunity favors the bold.
Other heats saw Moises Dominguez Requena (ESP) and Ethan Hacmun (DEU) advance, despite struggling to find big scores in the shifting lineup. Portugal’s Guilherme Fonseca and Peru Zuniga (EUK) also managed to find their rhythm, posting enough points to move on to the Round of 96.
What’s Next at Pantin
With the forecast calling for continued solid surf, organizers and athletes are preparing for more high-stakes action as the event progresses. The next official call is at 8:00 a.m. GMT+2 on Wednesday, with a possible 8:30 a.m. start if conditions allow. The ABANCA Pantin Classic Galicia Pro runs through August 31, 2025, and will be streamed live from Friday, August 29, on WorldSurfLeague.com, the WSL YouTube channel, and the free WSL app.
