Sean MacCormac completes death-defying 5,500-foot jump, rides suspension cables, lands on floating barge in San Francisco Bay
San Francisco, CA — In a feat that redefines the boundaries of extreme sports, American skysurfing pioneer Sean MacCormac has achieved what many considered impossible: becoming the first person to ride the suspension cables of San Francisco’s iconic Bay Bridge while skysurfing from 5,500 feet above the water.
The Red Bull Air Force athlete completed the world-first stunt dubbed “Bridge Rider” by leaping from a helicopter, navigating precise wind currents, and grinding the bridge’s massive suspension cables on a custom board before executing a safe landing on a floating barge below.
Precision Engineering Meets Extreme Athletics
MacCormac, who has completed more than 22,000 skydives throughout his career, deployed his parachute immediately after exiting the aircraft and began a carefully calculated three-minute flight path toward the bridge structure. The challenge required split-second timing and mathematical precision to align his custom board with the cables while managing unpredictable Bay Area wind patterns.
“This was probably the most intense, wildest project I’ve ever done,” MacCormac said after completing the historic jump. “I’ve never had that view before, and pretty sure no one else has either. To be able to complete this project brings me an incredible sense of accomplishment.”
The athlete emphasized the scientific approach required for success: “We put such incredible focus, math, and science into lining up the cable and landing safely on the barge.”
Months of Preparation and Training
The Bridge Rider project required extensive preparation, engineering analysis, and coordination with local authorities before MacCormac could attempt the real thing. To simulate the challenge, he trained at Skydive Elsinore near San Diego using a specially constructed 55-meter crane rig designed to replicate the Bay Bridge cables’ dimensions and positioning.
“We have a giant crane with two anchoring forklifts, and with Eric, our math magician, we’ve been able to come pretty darn close to emulating the schematics of the bridge,” MacCormac explained. “What we’re able to do is get some repetition and figure out what the best flightlines are and go through this whole process. It’s been really incredible and confidence-building, so we’ve crossed the rubicon of the unknown.”
Multiple successful practice runs allowed MacCormac to refine his speed, precision, and accuracy before attempting the death-defying stunt over San Francisco Bay.
Cutting-Edge Equipment and Safety Technology
The project featured a partnership with Prada Linea Rossa, which supplied high-performance garments and equipment specifically engineered for extreme conditions. The gear combined aerodynamic efficiency with comfort and mobility while prioritizing safety and freedom of movement during the high-stakes maneuver.
MacCormac’s custom board represented a fusion of skysurfing engineering and cutting-edge materials science, designed specifically for the unique challenges of cable riding at extreme altitude.
From Daydream to Death-Defying Reality
The inspiration for Bridge Rider originated during an unexpected moment of creativity. MacCormac recalled the project’s genesis during a lunch break while filming a BASE-jumping commercial in Los Angeles.
“We had a lunch break and I was looking out over L.A., daydreaming about skysurfing, and I just imagined this impossible grind where you could use the canopy to grind a rooftop or something,” he said. “Seeing lines with this equipment that I wouldn’t have imagined otherwise. From there, it just kind of percolated into this.”
Beyond Extreme Sports
MacCormac’s expertise extends far beyond recreational skysurfing. His diverse background includes work as a CIA civilian trainer, Hollywood stuntman, and civilian trainer for the US Navy and Air Force. This unique combination of aerial dynamics mastery with high-level tactical and stunt expertise provided the foundation for executing such a complex and dangerous feat.
Setting New Standards for Extreme Sports
The successful completion of Bridge Rider represents more than just a personal achievement for MacCormac — it demonstrates how extreme sports continue to evolve through the combination of athletic skill, scientific precision, and technological innovation.
As one of skysurfing’s leading figures, MacCormac has consistently pushed the boundaries of what the sport can achieve. This latest accomplishment adds another chapter to his legacy while inspiring a new generation of extreme athletes to reimagine what’s possible in the skies above America’s most iconic landmarks.
The Bay Bridge cable ride joins the ranks of extreme sports’ most memorable moments, proving that with proper preparation, cutting-edge equipment, and unwavering determination, even the most impossible dreams can become reality.
