Dominant performance yields no goals as Columbus Crew escape with valuable point at Red Bull Arena
HARRISON, N.J. – The New York Red Bulls controlled play for 90 minutes but failed to find the breakthrough in a frustrating 0-0 draw with Columbus Crew at Red Bull Arena on Friday night. Despite creating numerous chances and dominating possession, the Red Bulls couldn’t convert their opportunities, leaving them with just a single point when three were desperately needed.
The result keeps the Red Bulls’ playoff hopes alive but does little to ease the pressure with just five matches remaining in the regular season.
Fast Start Undermined by Offside Trap
The Red Bulls burst out of the gates with attacking intent from the opening whistle. They pressed high and created several promising opportunities in the first 15 minutes, but repeatedly fell victim to Columbus’s well-organized offside trap.
Emil Forsberg found himself in excellent positions multiple times but was flagged offside on each occasion. The most frustrating moment came in the 42nd minute when Forsberg appeared to score after a clever pass from Mohammed Sofo, only to see the assistant referee’s flag raised for a marginal offside call.
Choupo-Moting Leads Attack
Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting was the Red Bulls’ most dangerous threat throughout the match. The veteran forward created havoc on both flanks while searching for his 16th regular season goal.
His best chance came in the opening minute when Forsberg released him with a perfectly weighted pass. Choupo-Moting’s shot lacked the power to trouble Columbus goalkeeper Patrick Schulte.

The striker continued to threaten in the 18th minute with another opportunity created by Forsberg’s vision. This time his effort was on target, but Schulte made a comfortable save to keep the score level.
Choupo-Moting’s most acrobatic attempt came in the 56th minute. Dylan Nealis delivered a cross into the penalty area, and the forward dropped low to attempt a spectacular swinging shot. Once again, Schulte was equal to the task.
Debutant Breggren Gets First Taste
Gustav Breggren made his Red Bulls debut in the 77th minute, replacing Daniel Edelman for his first taste of MLS action. The substitute had 18 minutes to make an impression – 13 in regulation plus five minutes of stoppage time.
“I’m very happy to make my debut,” Breggren said after the match. “I think the fans were very good and good team performance. So, we need to keep going. It was nice to get my first minutes and hopefully more to come.”
While his impact was limited due to the brief appearance, Breggren showed glimpses of his potential and will hope for more opportunities as the season progresses.
Schwarz Praises Performance Despite Result
Head coach Sandro Schwarz found positives in his team’s display despite the disappointing result. The German tactician praised his players’ intensity and pressing while expressing frustration at their inability to convert chances.
“Yes, to analyze, first of all, and of course, we are frustrated that we didn’t win this game today,” Schwarz said. “But when we are looking to this performance against a really good team, and we played, for me, especially against the ball, very well, so dominant against the ball and very intense to find the right moment in our pressing.”
The coach highlighted his team’s defensive work and overall approach: “And first of all, it’s our basic to be very aggressive against the ball as a group. And I’m really satisfied with the performance. We are a little bit disappointed with the result, that’s clear, but about the performance, for me to be honest was one of the best games, especially against the ball for me.”
Statistical Dominance Means Nothing
The Red Bulls registered four shots on goal compared to Columbus’s limited opportunities. They controlled large portions of the match and created the better chances, but football’s cruel reality struck again – dominance without goals means nothing.
The team’s inability to convert clear opportunities continues a troubling trend that could prove costly in their playoff push. With Columbus content to defend and hit on the counter, the Red Bulls needed to be more clinical in the final third.
Playoff Picture Grows Concerning
This draw leaves the Red Bulls in a precarious position with five matches remaining. Three of those games come on the road, making their task even more difficult.
The team heads into the international break knowing they must find solutions quickly. Several Red Bulls players will join their national teams for World Cup qualifying duty and youth camps, potentially disrupting team chemistry at a crucial time.
With the playoff streak in serious jeopardy, the Red Bulls must use the break wisely. They need to address their finishing problems and find ways to break down organized defenses if they hope to extend their postseason run.
The performance against Columbus showed they have the quality to compete with playoff-bound teams. Now they must prove they can turn that quality into results when it matters most.
