Bronx, NY– New York City FC returned to action following their controversial exit from the Leagues Cup against Toluca FC. The team managed to get an unexpected long break before facing Nashville SC. Their original return was set for August 9 against the Columbus Crew, but maintenance at Citi Field pushed the game back to September. Nevertheless, the team had the perfect opportunity to bounce back in the domestic competition.
Despite recent results, Nashville SC arrived at the Bronx as one of the best teams in the Eastern Conference. The visitors were looking to end their negative streak at the Big Apple. The mission started well for the visitors, with Jacob Shaffelburg quickly sending a message and making a quick run in the wing within the first minute of play. Hany Mukhtar was also one to pay close attention to; his versatility and vision on the field make him Nashville’s secret weapon. It was that versatility that gave Nashville the advantage. Mukhtar’s pass between New York City’s lines gave Shaffelburg a perfect chance to open the score.
New York City managed to bounce back from that early goal after Maxi Moralez shot on target within 16 minutes of the game. Unfortunately, the team couldn’t connect properly throughout most of the first half. Their vulnerability in defense and misplaced passes could have been costly for New York City; thankfully, Matt Freese was able to pull a set of key saves to keep the game within reach for the hosts. However, an additional factor played a big part in the game.
The weather was key in New York City’s comeback, one way or another. Before the cooling break, Nashville looked confident and in control of the game. Once play resumed and the team regrouped, the dynamic changed. Passes improved, and positioning was more organized to execute the game plan properly. Hannes Wolf provided an assist again, this time for Andres Perea to level the game. The Colombian midfielder managed to make a quick movement inside the box to create space for his goal-scoring strike. Wolf now has 15 goal contributions this season. Alongside Alonso Martinez, the Midfielder continues to find his best form with the team.
The momentum was short-lived due to a weather delay put in effect by the 41st minute. Coincidence or not, who knows what could have happened if that weather delay hadn’t taken place? Nevertheless, both teams gave it their all in the second half. Alonso Martinez had two back-to-back opportunities to find the net. In the 51st minute, after a through ball by Andres Perea gave Alonso a one-on-one chance against the goalkeeper, his effort was well blocked by Joe Willis. Nashville, however, also had a chance of its own in the 54th minute through Shaffelburg once again, but his effort was not on target.
Alonso Martinez continued to give headaches to Nashville’s defensive line. His ball control and movements to beat defenders were proving to be difficult for the visitors. If you add the fact that even New York’s substitutions made the desired impact, Nashville never recovered after the rain delay. Agustin Ojeda and Alonso Martinez would combine to seal the game for New York City. Ojeda came down the left and crossed the ball inside the box; all Martinez had to do was tap it into the back of the net. It’s safe to say that manager Pascal Jansen’s substitutions paid off.
The goal in this fixture marked his 13th for the season, “15th if counting Leagues Cup”, he stated in the mixed zone. The Costa Rican striker also mentioned that he “is very grateful for the ongoing scoring momentum” and thanked the fans for their support. “Thankfully, I was able to score and repay the fans for their support.”. The team now heads to Cincinnati to continue escalating positions within the conference.
