Wrexham, Wales – Wrexham AFC Women have been granted a prestigious Football Association of Wales (FAW) National Girls Academy license for the 2025/26 campaign, marking a significant milestone in the club’s commitment to developing women’s football at both local and national levels.

Academy License Details

License Type: FAW National Girls Academy
Duration: 2025/26 season
Age Groups: U19 and U13 levels
Home Base: The Rock Stadium (recently acquired by Wrexham AFC)
Compliance: UEFA and FIFA regulations for women’s football development

The license represents a major advancement in Wrexham’s women’s football infrastructure, positioning the club as a key development hub for female talent in North Wales.

Strategic Partnership with FAW

The academy license enables Wrexham AFC Women to work more closely with the Football Association of Wales, creating a direct pathway for supporting women’s football development at the national level while driving local participation.

This collaboration aligns with the FAW’s broader strategy to strengthen women’s football infrastructure across Wales, ensuring equal opportunities for female players at all levels.

The Rock Stadium Integration

The timing of the academy license coincides perfectly with Wrexham AFC’s recent acquisition of The Rock Stadium, which will serve as the home base for the newly established academy teams.

This strategic venue acquisition, combined with Jenny Sugarman’s appointment as Head Coach, provides the club with both dedicated facilities and experienced leadership specifically designed to support women’s football development, creating an optimal environment for player growth and training.

Leadership Vision

Head of Women’s Football Operations Gemma Owen emphasized the significance of this development for the club’s long-term strategy.

Gemma Owen: “I’m pleased that Wrexham AFC Women have been granted a license to operate under a FAW National Girls Academy license. We look forward to working with the FAW to establish an Academy that can develop players for the first team, while continuing our track record of producing players to contribute at a senior level for the Club.”

Owen’s comments highlight the dual focus on developing talent for Wrexham’s first team while contributing to the broader Welsh national team pipeline.

Academy Structure and Operations

Initial Phase (2025/26)

The academy will launch with two age groups:

  • U19 Level: Focusing on players approaching senior football
  • U13 Level: Developing foundational skills in younger players

Venue Considerations

Owen addressed the strategic decision-making process regarding the academy’s structure:

Gemma Owen: “Given the uncertainty surrounding our venue at the time of applying for a license, we collectively agreed that the best option would be to ensure that all newly established Academy teams could operate without disruption.”

This pragmatic approach ensures operational stability while laying the groundwork for future expansion.

Impact on Existing Programs

The new academy license will result in changes to the club’s current development structure. Existing development center teams will no longer operate under the new academy license, representing a strategic shift toward the more comprehensive FAW-aligned model.

However, this transition is designed to create a more robust and nationally recognized pathway for player development.

Future Expansion Plans

Wrexham AFC Women have ambitious plans for academy growth beyond the initial two age groups.

Gemma Owen: “As a Club, we will explore all avenues to allow us to expand the number of our Academy teams in the near future.”

This development-focused approach aligns with Wrexham’s broader strategy across all levels of the club. Just as they’ve secured key signings like Kieffer Moore and Lewis O’Brien for their Championship campaign, the women’s academy represents a similar investment in long-term success.

This expansion vision demonstrates the club’s commitment to creating comprehensive development opportunities for female players across multiple age groups.

National Development Impact

The academy license positions Wrexham as a crucial contributor to Welsh women’s football development. The club’s track record of producing players who contribute at senior levels provides a strong foundation for the academy’s success.

Key Benefits:

  • National Pathway: Direct connection to FAW development programs
  • Local Impact: Increased participation opportunities in North Wales
  • Professional Standards: Compliance with UEFA and FIFA regulations
  • Equal Opportunities: Ensuring female players receive equivalent development resources

Regulatory Compliance

The academy model ensures compliance with updated UEFA and FIFA regulations, positioning Wrexham at the forefront of modern women’s football development standards. This compliance is crucial for:

  • International Recognition: Meeting global standards for player development
  • Pathway Legitimacy: Ensuring academy graduates are recognized by national and international bodies
  • Future Opportunities: Creating pathways to professional and international football

Strategic Context

This academy license represents another significant step in Wrexham’s comprehensive approach to women’s football development, following recent investments including The Rock Stadium acquisition and Jenny Sugarman’s appointment as Head Coach.

The club’s holistic approach mirrors their men’s team strategy, which recently saw James McClean commit through 2027 and Mo Faal’s strategic loan to Port Vale for development purposes. This demonstrates Wrexham’s commitment to sustainable growth across all levels of the organization.

Looking Ahead

The academy’s establishment creates a sustainable model for talent development that will benefit both Wrexham AFC and Welsh women’s football for years to come. The club’s commitment to working with the FAW and other stakeholders ensures this initiative will have a lasting impact.

Future Objectives:

  • Expand the academy to additional age groups
  • Develop direct pathways to first-team football
  • Contribute to the Welsh national team player pool
  • Establish Wrexham as a premier women’s football development center
