WASHINGTON — Federal agents executed a search warrant at the home of Democratic U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar on Monday morning. The enforcement action is part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation, according to The Associated Press, which first broke the story.
HSI Agents Converge on Washington-Area Residence
The search was carried out by agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), a division of the Department of Homeland Security. Two individuals familiar with the matter confirmed the raid to the AP on condition of anonymity, as they were not authorized to discuss the active case publicly.
The Justice Department confirmed in a statement on Monday that HSI agents executed a judicially authorized search warrant secured by the department within the Washington, D.C., area. Law enforcement officials blocked off the street Monday morning as the federal enforcement action unfolded.
While the Justice Department has affirmed that the raid is tied to a criminal probe, federal officials have declined to provide specific details about the investigation’s exact nature. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security referred all operational inquiries back to the Justice Department.
Prior Allegations and Political Backdrop
Representative Omar, a progressive lawmaker representing Minnesota’s 5th District, has long been a prominent target of Republican opposition. First elected to the House of Representatives in 2018, Omar is a well-known member of “The Squad,” a group of progressive female lawmakers.
Though official details regarding the specific focus of Monday’s search remain limited, conservative figures have repeatedly raised questions concerning Omar’s background. Vice President JD Vance has previously leveled public accusations against the congresswoman, asserting that she committed immigration fraud—a claim that Omar has vehemently denied.
In comments made to reporters in May, Vance addressed the scrutiny surrounding the Minnesota representative, stating, “It certainly seems like something fishy is there, but everybody’s entitled to equal justice under the laws. So we’re going to investigate it. We’re going to take a look at it. If we think there’s a crime, we’re going to prosecute that crime.”
Furthermore, during a previous interview with podcaster Benny Johnson, Vance stated that he and deputy White House chief of staff Stephen Miller had actively discussed the matter. Vance noted at the time that they were evaluating “what the legal remedies are” and working to determine how to legally build a case.
Rebuttals from Omar’s Office
Representative Omar and her congressional staff have consistently rejected the allegations brought against her, characterizing them as fabricated and politically motivated attacks. Omar has previously described the long-standing conservative assertions regarding her past and marital history as “disgusting lies.”
Following Vance’s public commentary earlier this year, Omar’s chief of staff, Connor McNutt, issued a sharp rebuke dismissing the vice president’s assertions as a defamatory distraction.
“This is a ridiculous lie and desperate attempt to distract from the pedophile protection party’s unpopular war of choice, increasing gas prices, and rapidly dropping polling numbers,” McNutt stated in March, responding directly to the administration’s claims.
A representative for Representative Omar did not immediately return a request for comment on Monday morning following the execution of the search warrant.
