President Donald J. Trump addressed reporters late Saturday night following an attempted attack at a Washington hotel, praising the rapid response of Secret Service agents and local law enforcement while urging Americans to resolve political differences peacefully.

The incident occurred during an event focused on free speech and attended by members of both political parties, journalists, and guests. According to the President, a man armed with multiple weapons attempted to breach a security checkpoint before being stopped by Secret Service personnel.
“This was an event dedicated to freedom of speech,” Trump said, noting that the crowd — which included Republicans, Democrats, independents, conservatives, liberals, and progressives — reacted with unity as the situation unfolded. “In one way, it was very beautiful to see. The room was totally unified.”

Secret Service Response Praised
Trump described the attacker as “a very sick person” and said the individual was subdued quickly. He confirmed that one Secret Service officer was shot at close range but was protected by a ballistic vest.
“I just spoke to the officer, and he’s doing great,” Trump said. “He’s in very high spirits.”
The President said he ordered the release of security footage “for transparency and clarity,” showing both the attacker’s actions and the law enforcement response.
Senior officials, including the Attorney General and Homeland Security leadership, echoed Trump’s praise for the agents and officers involved. They said federal and local agencies were coordinating on the investigation, with search warrants already underway.
Call for Peaceful Resolution of Political Differences
In his remarks, Trump urged Americans to “recommit with their hearts” to resolving disagreements peacefully.
“We have to resolve our differences,” he said. “Tonight you saw Republicans, Democrats, independents — everyone — come together.”
The President said he and First Lady Melania Trump were quickly escorted from the stage as the situation developed. Vice President JD Vance and other officials were also moved to safety.
Investigation Underway
Officials said the suspect was taken into custody and that investigators were examining his background, potential motives, and whether he acted alone. Trump said early indications suggested the attacker was a “lone wolf,” though he emphasized that authorities would release more information as it became available.
The FBI, Secret Service, Metropolitan Police Department, and other agencies are jointly handling the investigation. Officials urged anyone with information to contact law enforcement.
Event Will Be Rescheduled
Trump said the event, which was cut short due to security protocol, would be rescheduled within 30 days.
“We’re not going to let anybody take over our society,” he said. “We’re not going to cancel things out.”
The President said he initially wanted to continue the event but was advised against it due to uncertainty about the situation.
Questions on Security and Past Incidents
Reporters asked Trump about similarities to previous security incidents, including an attempt in Butler, Pennsylvania, and another in Florida. Trump said he could not allow fear to dictate his schedule.
“It’s a dangerous profession,” he said. “But I’m here to do a job.”
He added that the Secret Service acted “very quickly” and that he had confidence in their protection.
Officials Emphasize Law Enforcement Coordination
Attorney General Todd Blanche and FBI Director Patel both spoke, describing the response as an example of interagency coordination. They said evidence collection, witness interviews, and forensic analysis were already underway.
“You saw the very best of American law enforcement tonight,” Blanche said.
