NEW ORLEANS — Aaron Jones Sr. went marching and mashing his way into the end zone, refusing to be denied as he stiff-armed through safety Julian Blackmon at the 5-yard line to stretch the ball across the goal line. With that signature, relentless run, Jones Sr. broke a 13-13 third-quarter deadlock and propelled the Minnesota Vikings to a dominant 23-13 victory over the New Orleans Saints before a crowd of 70,006 at the Caesars Superdome.
The hard-fought win officially moves the red-hot Vikings to a flawless 5-0 record heading into their scheduled Week 6 bye week. The victory marks the 10th time in franchise history that Minnesota has opened a season 5-0. Head coach Kevin O’Connell also made NFL history, becoming just the 10th head coach ever to start a season 5-0 multiple times in his first five years on the job. Additionally, Big Blue extended its incredible regular-season winning streak to 10 consecutive games, cementing the longest active win streak in the NFL.
“I’m really proud of our team getting to 5-0 before the bye,” O’Connell stated. “We wanted to come into this season and progressively improve as a team. We want to try to win every opportunity that we get. We have dealt with some adversity. We dealt with some adversity today. These guys keep forging forward and forging together.”

Flores’ Suffocating Defense Mystifies the Saints
Minnesota’s defense delivered an absolute masterclass, completely mystifying the Saints’ offense from the opening kickoff. The aggressive front limited New Orleans quarterback Tyler Shough to a pathetic 16-of-25 passing for just 96 yards, forcing him into a miserable 38.1 passer rating. Shough spent the afternoon desperately trying to get the ball out as quickly as possible to avoid a relentless pass rush.
The pressure eventually broke through late in the game when outside linebacker Andrew Van Ginkel brought Shough down for a nine-yard sack. Van Ginkel finished with three tackles, including two for loss, to match his career-high of 4.0 sacks through the first five games of a season. The critical takedown extended Minnesota’s historic streak to 33 consecutive games with at least one sack, further extending the longest active streak in the NFL.
The front seven completely suffocated the Saints’ offensive tempo, forcing New Orleans into a brutal 2-for-10 showing on third downs. Six of the Saints’ nine total offensive possessions on the day were completely shut down, netting five or fewer total yards. While New Orleans managed one lone, laborious 15-play scoring drive by converting a pair of fourth downs, they were entirely held in check for the remaining three quarters.
Murray Opens Red-Hot as Big Blue Owns the Clock
The disparity between the two teams was glaring, as Minnesota outgained New Orleans by a lopsided margin of 364 to 142 yards. The offensive success was anchored by a masterclass in clock management, with the Vikings wearing down the Saints by commanding a massive 38:59-to-20:23 time-of-possession advantage.
Quarterback Kyler Murray opened the game on fire, completing his first 12 consecutive passes to eight different receivers for 101 yards. The flawless opening stretch set a new personal career best for Murray and made him just the fourth quarterback in franchise history to open a game with six completions to six different targets.
Murray finished an incredibly efficient afternoon completing 24-of-30 passes (80%) for 229 yards and one touchdown, registering a stellar 109.6 passer rating. He also terrorized the Saints’ defense with his legs on off-schedule scrambles, racking up 51 rushing yards on 10 attempts. With that stat line, Murray became the first quarterback in Vikings history to achieve an 80% completion rate and throw for 200+ yards while rushing for over 50 yards.
Murray delivered his biggest backbreaker late in the third quarter on a third-and-10, escaping an all-out blitz to rip off an 18-yard scramble to keep the chains moving. Three plays later on third-and-6, Murray delivered an absolute strike into an exceptionally tight window, beating triple coverage to find Justin Jefferson in the back corner of the end zone for a 15-yard touchdown pass. Jefferson celebrated his emotional, full-circle homecoming by breaking out “The Griddy” for his hometown fans, wrapping up his day with six catches for a team-high 79 yards. The score was the 45th receiving touchdown of Jefferson’s career, tying him for the second-most by a Viking in their first seven seasons.
Jones Hits Major Milestones Amid Heavy Roster Attrition
What makes Minnesota’s 5-0 record so impressive is their absolute refusal to make excuses despite an overwhelming wave of injuries. The team entered the game missing key starters like quarterback Jaxson Dart and receiver Jordan Addison, and the attrition continued on the very first pass play. Tight end T.J. Hockenson suffered a scary landing, falling head-first at the end of a reception and being immediately ruled out to enter the NFL’s concussion protocol.
Aaron Jones Sr. also had to leave the field briefly for evaluation but returned like a warrior to seal the game. Blackmon had stripped Jones Sr. of a first-quarter fumble to shift momentum early, but the star running back exacted his revenge with a game-winning touchdown run. Jones Sr. carried the offense on his back, rushing 25 times for 113 yards and the decisive score, marking his 24th career “century party” and cruising past 8,000 career rushing yards.
The eight-yard touchdown run also marked his 75th career touchdown, making him just the sixth active running back to reach that milestone. Jones Sr. sent the offense into victory formation with a late 15-yard scamper, elevating his season totals to 97 attempts and 410 rushing yards—the most productive five-game stretch of his career. The Vikings improve to a dominant 20-4 all-time when Jones Sr. hits double-digit carries.
With the starting lineup depleted, Minnesota successfully distributed the football to 10 different players. Tight end Gavin Bartholomew stepped up seamlessly in Hockenson’s absence, setting career highs with five catches for 33 yards. Wideout Jeshaun Jones, who was elevated from the practice squad on Saturday, recorded his first career reception on an explosive 32-yard vertical route in the third quarter.
Special Teams Execute Flawlessly in the Superdome
Minnesota’s special teams units continued their elite execution, tilting the field in the Vikings’ favor. The game’s definitive momentum shift occurred on the opening kickoff of the second half. Linebacker Jake Golday laid a massive hit, forcing his first career fumble, which was quickly recovered by Jeshaun Jones to give the offense premium field position right out of the intermission.
Myles Price provided an electric spark in the return game, ripping off a massive 43-yard punt return to set career-highs in both returns and receiving yards.
Kicker Will Reichard was an absolute sniper on a slick field, finishing 3-for-3 on field-goal attempts. Reichard opened the scoring with a 40-yarder to cap an elegant 51-yard opening drive. He later rescued a stalled drive right before the intermission, drilling a 54-yard field goal to give Minnesota a 7-6 lead at halftime.
Reichard hammered home his 34th consecutive field goal midway through the fourth quarter, blasting a 55-yarder that would have been clean from 60-plus yards out. The kick extends the longest active field goal streak in the NFL, leaving him just one shy of matching Gary Anderson’s all-time franchise record of 35. This marks Reichard’s 19th game with a 50+ yard field goal since 2024, tying him for the second-highest in the league over that span.
Looking Ahead
While first-year Saints head coach Kellen Moore watches his squad drop to a frustrating 1-4 amid questions about their offensive identity, the 5-0 Vikings head into their scheduled rest week completely in control of the NFC North. Minnesota will take the bye week to heal up before returning home to MetLife Stadium to defend their perfect record.
