When a host nation is playing a knockout game in the FIFA World Cup, they get their energy from their head coach and the home crowd that is cheering them on. Especially when your home stadium is the Estadio Azteca, as Mexico started red hot and torched Ecuador for two goals inside the first 45 minutes of the match. While they used the second half more for defensive purposes, Ecuador was no match for one of the host nations of this tournament’s edition, as Mexico defeated Ecuador by the final score of two goals to nil.
First goal to Mexico beating the offside trap
The fast pace from Mexico was starting to overwhelm Ecuador when they had possession of the ball. The play was moving along the far side of the pitch, and their opening goal was a beautiful display of timing and strong passing. Roberto Alvarado saw the defenders moving up and, just in front of the midfield line, made the long cross to spring Julian Quinones, who stayed onside and went on the attack. When Quinones got the ball and reached the Ecuadorian area, he made a slight cut and smashed the ball just inside the front post in the 22nd minute.
An unforced error helped Mexico get a second
Ecuador started to feel the pressure and sadly made a bad error to help Mexico get a second goal in the match. The defender tried to pass the ball and was intercepted by Raul Jimenez. He started to make a run, then passed the ball to his teammate Quinones, who quickly gave the ball back to Jimenez, who had no one around him, and took a big shot inside the near post and beat the keeper for the two-goal lead in the 31st minute. The pro-Mexican crowd went into a frenzy as their team was flying out on the pitch.
Ecuador had no life after their win against Germany
While Ecuador played as well as they could, the reality is the comeback victory over Germany in their final group stage match was their big victory to get them into the round of 32. But what they showed was determination to put themselves into this position and challenge an energetic Mexico that knew they had a major advantage over their opponents. They also lost their defender Piero Hincapie on a VAR Review for a red card offense covering his mouth and saying something derogatory, and he was sent off in the fifth minute of seven in second half stoppage time. Mexico’s next opponents will be the winner of the England vs. DR Congo Round of 16 match at the Estadio Azteca.
