Erling Haaland’s Match Winner Pushes Norway Past Ivory Coast

A big match between Norway and the Ivory Coast in the Round of 32 in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Another huge chess match was being played, and while the Ivory Coast did keep Erling Haaland off the scoreboard for most of the game, all he needed was that one moment to put the ball into the net and help his country earn their first knockout stage win and advance to the Round of 16. After the final whistle blew, the Scandinavian side of Europe won the match with the final score at two goals to one.

Just a simple tap-in was all Haaland and Norway needed

It was a fabulous setup with heart and determination from the Norwegians looking to get that go-ahead goal, and it was the game-winning goal to avoid extra time and a possibility of a shootout. Oscar Bobb was along the near side touchline trying to move the ball away from the defender. When he saw Patrick Berg making the run, Bobb laid the ball off toward him, and down to the endline he went. But Berg was inside the area and made the cross to Erling Haaland, who was wide open and made a scuff shot, but still had enough pace to roll harmfully over the entire goal line and gave his country the lead for good in the 86th minute.

Norway gets on the board first with a big strike

Norway was looking to open the scoring late in the first half as the Ivory Coast was putting on a strong defensive game. They passed the ball around until it was sent toward Martin Ødegaard, as he was positioned outside of the area in the middle of the park. He quickly made the pass toward the near side, finding Antonio Nusa. Once Nusa got the ball, he attacked down the near side, stopped, and cut toward his right to enter the area. Then made a big bending shot that was curling inside the far post and scored the first goal of the match in the 39th minute.

Ivory Coast equalizes with an amazing shot

Amad Diallo did all the work to create that chance and had just a little bit of help from a teammate with the ball. Diallo attacked down the far side touchline and had a clear path toward the Norway area. As he started to cut inside the area, he had a quick give-and-go with Nicolas Pepe. Once Diallo got it back, he continued his run towards the net, and as he was nearly close to the six-yard box at the front post, he took a quick rip and scored. While the Norway defender was right there to make a stop, he missed it by a second when the shot was taken in the 74th minute.

Norway’s next opponent

Advancing to the Round of 16, Norway will be facing five-time World Cup champion Brazil on Sunday, July 5th at MetLife Stadium in the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ, in the New York City Tri-State area. This will be a huge test for the Scandinavian side, as Brazil will not be an easy out, but knowing what Haaland will bring for his National Team, it should be another exciting match in this 2026 FIFA World Cup.
