Brazil’s Comeback Victory Over Japan Puts Them in the Round of 16

The second Round of 32 match at the 2026 FIFA World Cup got underway with a strong matchup as one of the best in Asia took on a five-time World Cup Champion from South America. Brazil faced Japan, and both teams were hungry to advance to the next round. It would be another chess match, as these two sides have faced each other before. Every inch of grass was a battle, and the tackles were hard, but after the entire 90 minutes were up, it would be Brazil that once again rose to the top as they defeated Japan by the final score of two goals to one.

Japan takes the lead from a long-distance strike

Brazil takes the victory at the death

The fourth official posted five minutes of second-half stoppage time, and many around the stadium felt this match was going into extra time. But knowing Brazil, they would find the match winner within the final moments toward the end of the match. The ball was played along the far side of the pitch, but when Brazil got control of it, they started to pass it around. As Bruno Guimaraes received the ball, he quickly found Gabriel Martinelli between two defenders with space. As Martinelli shot the ball, Zion Suzuki tried to make the save and did get a fingertip on it, but not enough, as the ball went inside the far post at the fifth minute of second-half stoppage time.

Who will Brazil face next?

While Brazil had a good performance in the second half, Japan just couldn’t find a big stop when they needed it and a chance of a big goal to retake the lead. But now Brazil will await their next opponents in the round of 16 as they await the winner between Norway & the Ivory Coast. It will be a huge match if Norway does face Brazil, but the Ivory Coast could also show some brilliance when they get the chance to shine on the big stage.
