USMNT Clean Sheet, Defeats Australia, Top of Group D

After taking down Paraguay in Sofi Stadium, the U.S. Men’s National Team headed north to the Pacific Northwest to face Australia at Lumen Field in Seattle. The expectations were that the USA would face a hard-fought and physical opponent, and they needed to show patience while being selective in their attacking runs. They did all that and matched Australia’s physical play as the boys won the match with a clean sheet by a final score of two goals to nil.

USA takes the lead on an Own Goal again

Once again, the U.S. Men’s National Team took the lead courtesy of an own goal from their opposition. The play began down the far side as Antonee Robinson brought the ball up and laid off a beautiful ball to Folarin Balogun, as he made a big attacking run, he turned toward the area and looked to pass the ball across the six yard box to Ricardo Pepi, but once again it would be the opposition to put the ball into their own net as Cameron Burgess tried to clear it out, but instead put the ball into his own net in the 11th minute

VAR overturns the offside flag for the second USA goal

The USA earned a corner at the near side and was sent back toward the top and outside of the Australian area. Sergino Dest took a hard shot that deflected off the group of Aussie defenders, popped up, and started to land towards the net. Alex Freeman tracked the ball, leapt in the air, and headed it in, but was originally flagged for an offside by the near-side assistant. VAR was viewing the situation and overturned the offside into a goal, as the last defender kept Freeman onside in the 43rd minute, and the celebrations were on.

Stingy defensive second half by the USA

The USA knew they had to continue to play strong defensively, and they were losing a bit of steam. They made Australia angry and frustrated, forcing them to make poor tackles and earn yellow cards. When it looked like Australia was going to overpower the USA with its size and strength, the USA matched that and battled hard to keep the clean sheet. Anytime the USA lost the ball, they fought back right away to get the ball back. Two solid matches, two victories, and they need another solid result to claim the top of Group D, as they have already qualified for the Round of 32.

Another historic moment for U.S. Soccer

With wins over Paraguay and Paraguay in this World Cup, the U.S. Men’s National Team has finally earned two wins in the group stage since the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, with wins over Belgium & Paraguay. If they do get a victory over Turkiye, it would be the first time they have a clean sweep in the group stage. But right now, Mauricio Pochettino has this Men’s National Team on a fabulous run, and hopefully, we can see some changes in the starting 11 in the final game and give some players some rest. The USMNT can now enjoy the victory and prepare for the Turks.
