Red Bull New York is currently in a four-match winless streak and a five-match winless streak in all competitions, with their loss to New York City FC in the U.S. Open Cup. While there have been some positives at the start of the season, the negatives have been glaring, and the only way to fix this situation is to face their next opponent at Sports Illustrated Stadium, as FC Dallas comes to town and tries to break their own winless streak against the Red Bulls.
It’s been a difficult winless streak after going unbeaten for two games against FC Cincinnati and the two-goal draw at Inter Miami. What should’ve been a victory over D.C. United became a four-goal draw and so on. The defense found new ways to drop points, and mental mistakes were shining very brightly for the Red Bulls, including the physical mistakes against NYCFC. Michael Bradley is well aware of this, and he knows he needs to find ways to fix this before heading into the World Cup Break and hoping to bring in more players during the Summer Transfer Window.
“We did it to ourselves when you want to discuss or analyze the goals that we have given away in this last period. You have to look closely at each game and each goal. And so it’s easy to look at the game against New York City. See that we conceded three goals— that’s a fact. Three goals on set pieces. Three of three. Unfortunately, very similar set pieces still provoke a different discussion and a different way to analyze. As opposed to that, from the run of play or come, because tactically we haven’t been able to get things right, or a decision on the field leads to a breakdown, and now we can see it differently.
It’s something that we’re looking really closely at because, for sure, for us to take the next step as a team and to continue to improve, we have to be better in that sense. But as I said, there’s a lot that goes into it. You know, if we look at the last two games, the first goal in Cincinnati is a play where they hit a diagonal ball, and now we have a chance to defend inside the box and don’t do great, and then they play a ball across inside the six to Denkey, and he scores. The second one is a penalty, and now, as we talked about, the last three against New York City are corner kicks. We’re looking hard at everything that we can do to help ourselves, to help the players. and continue to improve, to add to all of the things that we know are going in a really good direction,” said Michael Bradley.
FC Dallas is coming to town, and at the moment, they are in eighth place with 13 points. Petar Musa is their dangerman as he has nine goals in 10 matches for the Texas side. Head Coach Eric Quill is trying to keep his side in a playoff position while the club is currently in the middle, but near the bottom of the Western Conference. Bradley knows this is the next challenge for the club, and he is well aware of what needs to happen to break this current negative streak.
“Very good team, an athletic team, a team that plays with a lot of intensity, a team that has, you know, across the, everywhere across the field, speed and guys who really run forward aggressively. And so, yeah, we’re very aware of their qualities. Uxa is a really, really good striker in the league. Farrington is a good attacking player in the league. And so we’re very clear about about the that’s coming in, ready to make sure that we can do everything possible to come away with three points,” said Bradley
Red Bulls Captain Emil Forsberg also had some thoughts on FC Dallas as well. “We played Dallas in the pre-season. I remember that game quite well. It’s a physical team, physical forwards, strong, fast, good in the box. So, I mean, it’s going to be a physical game for us. We’ve got to be ready for that. And it’s a chance for us to prove ourselves that we take stuff in the right direction. We had a very… hard loss on Wednesday and tomorrow is a chance for us to get back up and we prove ourselves for ourselves, for our fans and to get those three points, and, as I said, it’s gonna be a physical game, but of course we want to go in there and play our way and win the game.” Said Forsberg.
“The best way to learn is to learn it yourself. I mean, if everybody could just snap your finger and say, ‘Oh, this is going to happen, before it happens,’ we all would be… I think for me, yeah. As I’ve been going through this kind of stuff, I think it’s important that you go through it yourself as well, and then we see it, and we talk about it. I’m just trying to be positive to push them, all the young guys. I think it’s important that they feel the trust that they have from everybody.
From me and from everybody else who is a little bit older and has been through this kind of journey. And not. Thank you. Being there, it’s like—oh, I think it’s important to have those emotions, have those kinds of feelings, seeing what they’re doing, what they’re doing right, what they’re doing wrong. Learning from them and then the next game, next practice, it’s gonna be better, but they’re still young. So you can’t. We must give them time. But at the same time, we want to win games, we want to do good.
So it’s a small line, but as I said, these guys are doing fantastic. Fantastic job, and they have Michael behind them as well. The whole team and we’re a group I mean, everything we do, we do together. We win together, we lose together. It’s the way it has to be. To be here for each other, to push each other, and also to feel the freedom on the pitch to do what you love to do, to do the stuff you’re good at,” said Forsberg
This will be another difficult match, but the Red Bulls know they have to turn it around, so they can celebrate with a legend of the club when Bradley Wright-Phillips gets inducted to Legends Row at Sports Illustrated Stadium and joins Luis Robles for this important moment for him and the club.
