Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump announced Sunday that he may block a new stadium deal for the Washington Commanders unless the NFL franchise reverts to its former name, the Redskins, which the team changed in 2022.
Speaking on his social media platform, Trump stated he would consider placing restrictions on the stadium project if the team doesn’t “change the name back to the original ‘Washington Redskins,’ and get rid of the ridiculous moniker, ‘Washington Commanders.'” He argued the team would be “much more valuable” with its original name.
Stadium Deal Background
The Commanders and the District of Columbia government reached an agreement earlier this year to construct a new stadium at the former RFK Stadium site, where the franchise played for over three decades. The deal became possible after President Joe Biden signed legislation in January transferring the federal land to D.C. control as part of a short-term spending bill passed by Congress in December.
Local Officials Respond
D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson downplayed Trump’s potential influence over the deal, stating he has “heard from no — zero — District residents, complaining about the name change or saying this is an issue in connection with the stadium.” Mendelson told The Washington Post that he was uncertain about the restrictions Trump could implement.
Ownership Position
Josh Harris, who purchased the Commanders from Dan Snyder in 2023, previously indicated the current name would remain permanent. Shortly after the acquisition, Harris dismissed speculation about reverting to the former name, stating it would not happen.
Cleveland Also Targeted
Trump extended his comments to Cleveland’s baseball team, suggesting the Guardians should return to their former name, the Indians, claiming there was “big clamoring for this.” The team changed its name from Indians to Guardians in 2022, having announced the decision in December 2020.
Guardians President of Baseball Operations Chris Antonetti responded that while the organization understands that different perspectives exist on the name change, they remain committed to building the Guardians brand and are “excited about the future that’s in front of us.”
Name Change Timeline
Washington announced it would retire the Redskins name and logo in July 2020 during nationwide discussions about racial sensitivity. The franchise, which began as the Boston Redskins in 1933 before relocating to Washington in 1937, operated as the Washington Football Team for two seasons before adopting the Commanders name in 2022.
Cleveland similarly phased out its Chief Wahoo logo in 2018 and announced the Indians’ name change in December 2020, officially becoming the Guardians in July 2021.
Congressional Authority
While D.C. operates with an elected mayor and city council, Congress maintains oversight of the city’s budget. However, the extent of presidential authority to influence the stadium deal remains unclear, particularly given that the land transfer legislation has already been signed into law.
Both teams have stated they have no plans to revert to their former names, setting up a potential standoff over the Washington stadium project.
