The New York Rangers continue their winning ways as they head back across the Northern border to take on the Minnesota Wild in their next road game, in their short two-game road trip. These Rangers came to the Grand Casino Arena to face the third-place side of the Central Division and played a fantastic game with two goals in each of the first two periods. They get the win in the State of Hockey as the Rangers extended a four-game winning streak by the final score of four to two.
Game recap
The Rangers earned a power play, but the Wild decided to go short-handed. The shot was stopped by Igor Shesterkin, and the rebound was taken by Vadislav Gavrikov. He dropped off the puck to Noah Laba, and he gave a crossice pass to Gabe Perreault, skating down the far side. Once Perreault was inside the offensive zone, he returned the pass to Laba, as he swept in a hard shot and scored at 2:41 of the first period on the power play. The Rangers’ second goal of the game was a brilliant pass from the near point when Adam Fox sent the puck towards the net as Tye Kartye knocked it down and stayed out of the net. Gavrikov skated toward the near post and swept a backhander off the goalie and in at 15:00 of the first period.
After Matt Boldy cut the deficit in half, the Rangers continued with their hot play and scored again. Uhro Vaakanainen was at center ice and retook possession of the puck. He went towards the far side and saw Taylor Raddysh. A hard pass to Raddysh just on the blue line, and he led Jaroslav Chmelar for a breakaway down the slot. Chmelar made a move, then a backhander that just slipped through the pads of the goalie and in at 8:41 of the second period. Then, a fourth goal for the Rangers, as they dumped and chased it into the Wild’s zone. They put the puck back toward the far boards, where Adam Fox passed it to Gavrikov. The shot was deflected off the stick of Vincent Trocheck and beat the goalie at 9:03 of the second period.
While the Wild did score a second goal in the third period, there was nothing more they could’ve done as Igor Shesterkin shut the door and cemented the two points, and the Rangers will head back to Madison Square Garden as they will host the Los Angeles Kings. But this game, you saw a team that looks much better, but unfortunately, will not make the playoffs. Some are thinking they might put themselves out of the running for the positioning of the NHL Lottery for the number one pick in the 2026 NHL Draft. Until the regular season ends, right now, just enjoy the positives that are coming the Rangers’ way and what this can do for the future next season.
Mike Sullivan’s comments
“Obviously, I thought we had a great first period. Probably a great first half. And then. You know, we proceeded to march to the penalty box. I think we were. I think we’re killing penalties for whatever it was, 14 minutes of the last 40. It’s hard because it taxes guys.
It takes other guys out of the game against one of the best power plays in the league. But the guys competed hard. Shesty was obviously terrific tonight. I just thought we had the right intentions. You know, we were playing a north-south game. We were playing a straight-ahead game.
And I think when we play fast, we are fast. And so I thought in the first period. We did a great job at it. And we controlled territory. We scored some goals. We got some great looks. And I thought we lost. A little bit of juice as the game went on, give Minnesota credit.
I thought they, you know, they obviously elevated their intensity also, but, you know, obviously Shesty was there to make some huge saves for us down the stretch, especially that six on five, six on four, whatever it was,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.
