After three practice sessions for a day and a half, it was finally time to get qualifying underway at the Australian Grand Prix. The cars were buzzing around the track to see who would take the fastest time and the lead spot on the grid for the race, as 21 of the 22 cars were hoping to make that top ten finish and race on the final day. Most of the first two rounds were quiet, but a few issues popped up, and a close call entering pit lane by two teammates that could’ve been disastrous, but thankfully, quick thinking prevailed, as the fastest car stood at the top of the list to get his car ready for the green light when the race starts.
Qualifying Review
George Russell, from the first round to the shootout, was the fastest car throughout the field. Oscar Piastri attempted in the shootout to pass Russell to take the top spot, but the Englishman made sure the home country hero wouldn’t steal the pole position and retook it with ease. His teammate, Kimi Antonelli, would take second, both representing Mercedes, while Isack Hadjar from Red Bull Racing took the third spot, Charles LeClerc of Ferrari took fourth place, Piastri of McLaren took fifth, and his teammate, Lando Norris, took sixth. Lewis Hamilton, also of Ferrari, took seventh, Ford/Racing Bulls teammates took eighth and ninth, respectively, in Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad. Finishing up in tenth was Gabriel Bortoleto of Audi.
“It was a great day. We knew there was a lot of potential in the car, but until we get to this first Saturday of the season, you never know. But it really came alive this afternoon, especially with the track temps cooled. We know we tend to favour those conditions. I’m also really happy to have Kimi here. It makes me as well because it’s been such a hard job for the team. To deliver this car and uh, they did an amazing job in the garage as well today, so all in all, mate, really good day,” said George Russell
Verstrappen is done after one lap
After three solid practice sessions, Max Verstappen exited the garage and hit the gas to begin his qualification laps. When he was ready to enter the first turn, he suddenly spun out of control, went right into the gravel pit, and slammed into the wall as he was eliminated for the rest of the day and the race. He radioed his team and told them his brakes locked up and made him spin out of control. On the replay, when his brake lights flashed twice, sparks were flying under his car, and that was the moment he lost control just as he was finishing his first qualifying lap. When Verstappen returned to the garage, he had a negative look on his face.
For his teammate, Isack Hadjar, he was able to complete the qualifying, but during the later session, there was a replay of him losing control in the first turn as he entered the gravel, but found a way to keep his car upright and re-entered the track with no issues at all. Finishing third was a satisfying feeling for him.
“Very smooth qualifying, you know, the run-up too. Wi-Fiing the whole weekend was a bit difficult, you know, we’re not really… in a position to fight. I felt like the Ferrari, the McLaren, was a big shift for me, but we kind of built up to it the whole qualifying session. The only thing I can do is take a better start, but then that was just too fast at the moment, so. I want to keep my position,” said Isack Hadjar.
Ford/Racing Bulls almost died at the pit entrance
When the second session of qualifying came to an end, Arvid Lindblad was racing quickly toward the pit entrance. At the time, he had no idea that his teammate, Liam Lawson, was right in front of him, moving slowly with another car next to his left. Lindblad had to hit the brakes quickly, or both cars would’ve been wrecked, and both would’ve lost their places in the top ten of qualifying. Lindblad radioed back to his team and was upset that his teammate was still in the entrance lane and not inside the pit lane getting to the garage fast enough.
Debree from Kimi Antonelli was on the track
Usually, in qualifying, the track would be free and clear of any wrecks or debris, and the track maintenance crew would work hard to remove anything that would injure the cars while the yellow flag is out. Unfortunately, Kimi Antonelli had two pieces missing from his car, and they were on the track. At turn one, he lost his cooling cover device that was off the track and into the gravel, but a piece of his front wing was on the track, and no one was able to recover it until Lando Norris sped down the track, and his left front tire hit the front wing, shattering the fiberglass part into a million pieces. Thankfully, Norris’s car wasn’t damaged, nor did his tire receive a puncture to make it flat.
It’s time for race day, and let’s get this new season started of Formula One Racing.
