New Season, New Head Coach, hoping for the same results
A brand-new season begins for the MLS Next Pro side Red Bull New York 2, as the club now defends its title from last season’s historic run. Gone is head coach Michael Bradley as he took over the first team; also gone are Adri Mehmeti, Tyler Rosborough, and even though he had two short-term loan stints withthe first team in Matthew Dos Santos, some firmly believe he will get a first team contract sometime later this season or next season. Right now this two team will be led by the former assistant coach of last year’s first team, Dominik Wohlert, and after a strong preseason down in Panama, there is excitement to see what he can do to top last season.
This is a fantastic opportunity for Wohlert as he will now lead these kids and young men into the battlefield of a soccer pitch. We all know if he is successful, Wohlert could be in line for a head coaching position someday at a club either in MLS or possibly back to Germany or somewhere in Europe. But for right now, he has a wonderful chance to help improve these players currently on the squad and those academy kids who might get a second team contract and enhance the roster for this season and the future of the club.
“It’s just a great situation to be in a club that really values young prospects. And now being in this position makes me even more excited. Working with the young guys, trying to go with them out for training, trying to see the development. And that’s the nice thing I would say, even with our squad now, over the last four or five weeks, the progression from the guys, the development from the guys you see in short times, really the next step. And that’s enjoyable. And again, we just try to be there and try to guide them in the right direction. And so far, it has been really good from every individual,” said Head Coach Dominik Wohlert
What Ibrahim Sekagya started last season as head coach, he was given a promotion to join the first team as an assistant coach, and Michael Bradley took over from June till the end of the season to win the championship. Sekagya started the run, while Bradley enhanced it with a few tweaks. Now that Wohlert will take over and start a brand new season, will he try to bring some tweaks into the squad, and what will he try to do to make things fresh and new?
“We want to be a team that can find different solutions to score and to get away with three points in the end. And I think that’s our big goal, what drives us every day. And again, we will always be a team that tries to be active. We want to be proactive in every phase. We don’t want to sit back. We have a certain way of playing, playing the game. We want to see, and I think that’s what we try to continue. But again, there will be some smaller things we try to make different. There will be some things we continue, but in the end, it’s all Red Bull. It’s all our idea of playing the game.”
With a plethora of goalkeepers at the club. from the first team and the second team, combined with Aidan Stokes, Austin Causey, A.J. Marcucci, and the first team, adding U.S. Men’s National Team goalkeeper Ethan Horvath, we will see what will happen at the two team with stopping those chances from the opposition. Tobias Szewczyk has joined the two teams from the youth sides, and he’s excited about getting some time and earning his spot.
“I feel great. I feel like we have a really good group here, a really strong group, even though there are a lot of new players here, I feel like we have a pretty strong, similar group from last year, and can’t wait till Sunday to see how we do. It definitely means a lot, especially joining the Red Bulls from the U-12 year and working my way up here. It definitely means a lot to be able to play for what I looked up to at one point. So definitely it’s important to me and definitely to my parents as well,” said Tobias Szewczyk
Opening the season at Sports Illustrated Stadium, where they won the championship last season, will be a huge boost to the roster to begin their title defense. Then, moving back to Montclair State University’s Soccer Park for the rest of the home portion of the schedule. But this should be an exciting season for the two team of Red Bull New York. Let’s see what they can do and hope for another successful season.
