The U.S. International goalkeeper comes to Harrison
Harrison, NJ- Red Bull New York has officially received U.S. International Goalkeeper Ethan Horvath on a free transfer from Welsh side Cardiff City in English football to begin his MLS career on a one-and-a-half-year contract through June of 2027, with options for the 2027-28 & 2028-29 seasons when MLS switches to the International Calendar. The club also sends to Charlotte FC $75,000 in General Allocation Money this season, $75,000 in GAM for 2027, and the highest of RBNY’s second-round draft picks in the 2027 MLS SuperDraft for the discovery rights of Horvath.
Horvath’s Cardiff City Stint
Horvath signed with Cardiff City in 2024, making 36 appearances with eight clean sheets. He went on loan to Sheffield Wednesday in the 2025 season, with 16 appearances and two clean sheets. He helped Sheffield Wednesday advance in the EFL Cup by knocking out Leeds United in the penalty kick shootout, making two big saves.
“Ethan brings a tremendous amount of experience and professionalism to our group,” said Head of Sport Julian de Guzman. “He has competed at the highest levels, and his leadership will be invaluable for our locker room and our goalkeeping unit as a whole.”
Horvath’s club career
He began his club career in Europe with Norwegian side Modle FK in 2013 and made his debut on May 16, 2015. He helped Molde FK qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage in the 2015-16 season. He was the fifth American to perform in the Secondary Continental club competition and led them to a first-place finish in Group A, making 10 saves in a 1-1 draw against Ajax of Amsterdam to clinch the group.
In 2017, Horvath signed with Belgium side Club Brugge of the Jupilier Pro League in January of 2017, making 64 appearances and earning 21 clean sheets. In his first season, he helped Brugge earn a place in the 2017-18 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round. In 2018, he made three starts in the Jupilier Pro League playoffs and helped the club win the championship and qualify for the UEFA Champions League group stage. He converted three consecutive clean sheets in the group stage against AS Monaco, Borussia Dortmund, and Atletico Madrid. He won three Jupilier Pro League titles and one Belgian Super Cup in 2018-19.
Then moved to England at Nottingham Forest in 2021, then went on loan to Luton Town in the 2022-23 season. He made 51 appearances and converted 20 clean sheets to get them promoted to the Premier League the following season. While with Nottingham Forest, he made 11 appearances with four clean sheets.

He is a strong shot-stopper, commands his area well, and fits the way we want to play.”
International career
Horvath has made ten appearances for the U.S. Men’s National Team. and earned three clean sheets. He is a two-time CONCACAF Nations League medal winner and came in relief in the inaugural tournament for an injured Zach Steffen, and made several saves, including a penalty kick save against Andres Guardado to keep the three goals to two lead in extra time. He was named the Man of the Match in the final.
