With the Spring semester underway on the grounds of the United States Military Academy, students across campus received recognition for their work in the classroom this past fall.
On January 8th, it was announced that 25 cadet athletes and team managers from the hockey team were named to the Dean’s List.
Of those 25 names on the list, 20 are active players. For head coach Zach McKelvie, that’s two-thirds of his 30-player roster that achieved a 3.0 or higher GPA.
Leadership is a huge deal at West Point. All the underclassmen look up to each one of the captains on the team and follow their lead.
So when your captain, junior Barron Woodring, and his three assistants, junior Nik Hong, junior Easton Zueger, and senior Sean Vlasich, are all putting the time and effort into being not just a great player on the ice, but an excellent student in the classroom, that trickles down the ladder to the rest of the team.
Here’s what head coach Zach McKelvie had to say about the news.
It’s great for the guys. Being a Division I athlete at any school is tough, most people do not realize how much pressure there is on these kids. At West Point, it’s even more demanding. So, for our guys to make the commitment in the classroom and on the ice every day is remarkable. Our guys don’t have an on/off switch, they are always on in whatever they are doing, so the whole coaching staff is tremendously proud of them and our support staff, who help them in every aspect of cadet life.”

In the Spring, Army Hockey will look to improve in the classroom as they aim for greater than 25 cadet athletes and team managers to be named to the Dean’s List to close out the academic year.
With the second half of the season fully underway, Army is set to travel to Erie, Pennsylvania, this weekend and take on Mercyhurst University as the Black Knights restart Atlantic Hockey America Conference play.
Puck drop at Mercyhurst Ice Center is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET Friday night and 5 p.m on Saturday.
