New York, NY — Los Angeles Chargers linebacker Denzel Perryman has been suspended without pay for two games after repeated violations of NFL playing rules designed to protect player health and safety, the league announced Monday.
The suspension follows an incident during Sunday’s game against the Dallas Cowboys, where Perryman was penalized for unnecessary roughness in the second quarter. Officials flagged him for delivering a forcible blow to the helmet of Cowboys wide receiver Ryan Flournoy, who was on the ground after making a catch. The action was found to violate Rule 12, Section 2, Article 10(b), which prohibits players from using any part of the helmet or facemask to make forcible contact with an opponent’s head or neck area.
This is not Perryman’s first infraction, with the league citing repeated violations as a factor in the two-game suspension.

Perryman will miss the Chargers’ upcoming contests in Week 17 against the Houston Texans and Week 18 against the Denver Broncos. He will be eligible to return to the active roster on Monday, January 5.
Under the terms of the NFL’s Collective Bargaining Agreement, Perryman has the right to appeal the suspension. Any appeal will be reviewed by Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson—hearing officers jointly appointed and compensated by the NFL and NFLPA to rule on on-field discipline cases.
The Chargers will have to adjust defensively as they head into the final stretch of the regular season without one of their key linebackers.
