Behind after 45 minutes and couldn’t come back
Davie, FL- Fort Lauderdale United was home at Beyond Bancard Field as they hosted the Spokane Zephyer for a big matchup in the Gainbridge Super League. After the full 90 minutes were done, it would be the visitors from Washington State that got the victory, even if they were down to ten women by a final score of three goals to one.
A costly mistake puts the home side behind
Fort Lauderdale got caught with their pants down when Bella Hara was trying to assess where and when to distribute the ball. Stolen by Spokane inside the area, then Fort Lauderdale scrambled to get the ball out, but out of nowhere was Cameron Tucker, who took the shot, and somehow the ball whizzed by Hara and her defenders to go into the back of the net in the 5th minute.
A late goal in the opening half extends the lead
Spokane, looking for a second goal in this one, came late inside the final two minutes of regulation in the first half. A long cross was blocked by the Fort Lauderdale defender, but the ball was loose. Then, stepping into the ball was Felicia Knox. She took the shot, and it bounced in front of Hara, who missed it and scored in the 44th minute.
Spokane leads by three
Spokane earned a corner at the near side. A long cross was taken low, then deflected toward the far side of the area. Lena Silano came in quickly and tucked it inside the far post for the third goal of the match for the Zephyer as they had a commanding lead in the 67th minute.
Spokane goes down to ten women
It was a fabulous night for Spokane, but they would have a numerical disadvantage the rest of the way. Ginger Fontenot earned her first yellow card in the 63rd minute, but later in the match, she was shown her second yellow card, then red in the 69th minute, when she grabbed Kelly Van Treeck from behind and sent her down on the pitch.
Pulled one back, but not enough
Kiara Locklear went on a two-on-one and scored for Fort Lauderdale to make the score a bit better, but the home side wasn’t able to get back into the match, as they fell at home to a Spokane side that was determined to get a big result on the road, and they got it.
“It’s very disappointing. A lot of goals were given up, and that can’t happen. Going into the second half of the season, we’re focused on fine-tuning and perfecting the fundamentals and getting going,” Said Head Coach Ali Rogers
