Tight defensive contest ends in a Rangers win
St. Louis, MO- The New York Rangers headed back on the road for a quick trip to the Midwest as they visited the St. Louis Blues at the Enterprise Arena. After a low-scoring regulation game, these two teams headed for the extra period, and it would be the visiting Rangers to pull off the win as they defeated the Blues by a final score of two to one in overtime.
Shesterkin forced to play the puck
The Blues cleared the puck out of their zone and dumped it into the Rangers’ end of the ice. As Igor Shesterkin played the puck, he was being forced by Jonatan Berggren to play the puck. Shesterkin tried to dish it to Carson Soucy, but lost it at the near boards. Dalibor Dvorsky quickly skated in and pushed the puck toward Berggren. From a tight angle on the near side, Breggren snapped it over Shesterkin’s shoulder and under the crossbar at 18:58 of the first period.
Prized prospect gets his first
The Rangers went on the power play, and the second unit came on for the final 15 seconds. As Scott Morrow skated out with the puck. He gave it to Noah Laba at the near side and entered the zone. A crossice pass to Will Cuylle at the far boards, with a long shot, but coming in from the slot was Gabe Perreault, who tried to put the brakes on, while the puck came and he redirected it past Jordan Binnington at 6:02 of the second period for his first National Hockey League goal.
Defensive third and the OT Winner
Both Binnington and Shesterkin played a strong third period, giving nothing away to either side. The game was settled in overtime when the Rangers got their magical chance again to take the second point in the extra five-minute session. Vladislav Gavrikov picked up the puck from the far corner of his own zone and skated it out.
He left the puck for Vincent Trocheck, who picked up the speed and entered the Blues’ zone. Skated toward the far boards and made a buttonhook to get J.T. Miller open for the pass. Miller gets to the top of the slot and ripped a hard shot past Binnington for the game winner and his third overtime winner this season at 2:21.
Gabe Perrault finally returns
The Rangers called up Gabe Perreault and Brennen Othemann from the Hartford Wolf Pack and sent Brett Berard and Jaroslav Chmelar back down. His second stint with the Rangers this season, who had played 20 games in the AHL, scoring 10 goals and having seven assists for 17 points. Hopefully, he will remain with the team, along with Rookie Noah Laba, so both can flourish together and put the Rangers on a positive streak, both at home and on the road.
“I thought, obviously, there were momentum swings on both sides. You know, I thought the first two periods, you know, we were probably the better team. I thought they were the better team. In the third period. You know, they pushed, they elevated their intensity in the third. I thought they controlled territory in the third, but I thought it was the other way around in the first and second.
You know, we got down a goal after the first period, you know, it was really our own undoing. You know, I think we’re better. Then on the execution of some of our handles or our breakouts. But give them credit. They elevated their game in the third. Obviously, it was an even game. The overtime, good players make good plays,” said Head Coach Mike Sullivan.
