Discussing the opponents for the U.S. Men’s National Team
Washington, D.C.- The World Cup Draw finally came to our nation’s capital as the U.S. Men’s National Team was about to learn its fate as to who they would be drawn against, as they were predetermined to be drawn in Group D by President Donald Trump. Then it would be the draw assistants Shaquille O’Neal, Aaron Judge, and Wayne Gretzky to decide the fate of their opponents.
The opponent from the land down under
In Pot 2, Shaq selected Australia, and they were placed in position D3. Currently ranked 26th in the world and fifth in the Asian Football Confederation, the Socceroos qualified with five wins, four draws, and a loss for 19 points and finished in second place in Group C of the third round of the Asian World Cup Qualifiers.
Still a young squad after the days of Tim Cahill are long gone, they are a fiesta and scrappy bunch. But the U.S. Men’s National Team has already faced them in a friendly this past October 14th in Commerce City, Colorado, when Cristian Roldan assisted on both goals converted by Haji Wright at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park. Unfortunately, Christian Pulisic suffered an injury then, but has since recovered and is currently with AC Milan. A two goals to one victory in that friendly.
South American Flair
In Pot 3, Aaron Judge drew Paraguay, and they were placed in position D2. Currently ranked 39th in the world and sixth in CONMEBOL, the South American Confederation, the Al Birroja finished at the final automatic spot in sixth place in the table with seven wins, seven draws, and four losses for 28 points in CONMEBOL World Cup Qualifiers
Paraguay has been an up-and-down team in recent years, but they always attempt to get themselves into the thick of things when they need a result, when they are down. Paraguay faced the U.S. Men’s National Team at Subaru Park in Chester, Pennsylvania, just outside of Philadelphia. They suffered a two goals to one loss when Gio Reyna and Folarin Balogun scored to take the victory. Of course, we can’t forget the dust up with Alex Freeman jousted with Gustavo Gomez.
Pick your poison in the UEFA Playoff C Winner
Four European teams have been drawn against each other. The UEFA Playoff C Winner was chosen by Wayne Gretzky in Pot 4 and placed in D4. Turkiye will host Romania, while Slovakia will host Kosovo. The winners will face each other for that World Cup spot in Group D. Turkiye is ranked 25th in the world, while 13th in UEFA. Slovakia is ranked 45th in the world, while ranked 24th in UEFA.
Romania is ranked 47th in the world, while ranked 26th in UEFA, and finally, Kosovo is ranked 80th in the world, while 37th in UEFA. Out of the four teams that could go to Group D, Turkiye is the favorite, while both Slovakia and Romania have a puncher’s chance at an upset. Kosovo is the biggest dark horse out of all these teams. Their playoff matches will be during the International Window of March 2026.
Pochettino enjoyed the draw and Washington, D.C.
For the Head Coach of the U.S. Men’s National Team, Mauricio Pochettino, he enjoyed his time working with the government and being at our nation’s capital. He was also impressed with FIFA as they prepared for this amazing gala to celebrate the game and piecing together the draw for the FIFA World Cup.
“It was an amazing few days here in DC, in Washington, DC. I wanted to say thank you to all the people, you know, the people who work in the government, who make it possible to be safe, the organization of FIFA, the organization of the USA, and the federation of the national team. I think everyone who was involved was amazing, making it very easy for us to be here and enjoy the that is the massive event in the world.
And yes, how I live the experience is with happiness because it’s a unique moment and then seeing what you know the teams we are going to face in the World Cup, but with zero expectation because I think what today can look like in some way in six months can change because that is true for us the same. And I think yes, I am so happy to be part of this event, and we really enjoy the moment,” said Pochettino.
