Army West Point junior captain Barron Woodring earned Atlantic Hockey America “Forward of the Week,” the conference announced Tuesday afternoon. It’s Woording’s first time earning the award in his collegiate career.
This is the first time an Army play was named AHA “Forward of the Week” since Nik Hong on January 13th, following a sweep of Mercyhurst.
To earn this honor, the Chicago, Illinois native helped Army snap its nine-game winless streak this past Saturday afternoon with a 5-4 victory over #18-ranked UMass. Army head coach Zach McKelvie praised his captain’s performance not just on the ice, but as a leader.
“Barron was excellent for us this week and especially against UMass,” said McKelvie, a former Army captain himself. “Our team has been struggling, and as the captain, he stepped up and led the way both in the locker room and with his performance on the ice.”

This weekend, against both the Bentley Falcons and the UMass Minutemen, the Army captain recorded:
- One Goal
- Two assists
- 25/51 (49%) on Faceoffs
- Two Blocked Shots
Head coach Zach McKelvie has tasked Woodring with going up against the opponent’s top-line players in the hardest minutes this season. Not only that, but the captain plays on both special teams units and picked up his goal Saturday night short-handed.
Through fifteen games, Woodring leads the Black Knights in points with 12 (4 Goals & 8 Assists), faceoffs taken (347, 53.9%), and has been assessed just one penalty this season.

To go deeper into faceoff dot, Woodring is fifth in college hockey with 187 faceoff wins, behind Klavs Veinbergs (198, Colorado College), Tyson Gross (195, St. Cloud State), Charlie Cerrato (194, Penn State), and T.J. Hughes (193, Michigan).
If he keeps this type of production up, Woodring will be in the conversation for First-Team All-AHA at the end of the season.
Woodring and the Black Knights will be back in action this Friday when the team travels to Fairfield, Connecticut, to open a series with Sacred Heart University. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET.
