QUEENS, NY — In their final home match of the season, the St. John’s women’s soccer team (3-8-5, 1-5-3 BIG EAST) delivered a memorable performance for their seniors, defeating DePaul (4-12-1, 1-7-1 BIG EAST) 2-0 on Saturday night at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
Seniors Mia Agresti and Molly McGlame provided the heroics, each scoring their first goals in years as the Red Storm secured their first BIG EAST victory of the season before 213 fans.
The victory capped a successful week for St. John’s, which earned a 1-0-1 record after drawing Butler 1-1 on Wednesday night. The Red Storm will now travel to Omaha for their regular-season finale against Creighton on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 2 p.m. ET.
Senior Night Magic: Agresti and McGlame Deliver
The Red Storm wasted no time establishing control, netting two goals in the opening 25 minutes and never looking back. Both tallies came from seniors playing their final home match, adding emotional weight to an already meaningful victory.
In the ninth minute, junior Leana Ruiz orchestrated the opening goal with a perfectly weighted pass to Agresti in the middle of the pitch. The Monmouth Beach, N.J., native found fellow senior McGlame with a through ball into the box, and the Hanover, Mass., native unleashed a strike into the top right corner to give St. John’s an early 1-0 lead.
The goal marked McGlame’s second career tally and her first in 777 days, dating back to Sept. 9, 2023, when she scored against Lehigh. The emotional breakthrough set the tone for a dominant first-half performance.
Agresti wasn’t finished. In the 25th minute, the senior midfielder capped a beautiful team sequence with a world-class strike that will be remembered as one of the finest goals in program history.
Daniela Monzon initiated the play with a give-and-go that put Ruiz on a breakaway. Monzon then dribbled into the middle of the field before feeding Agresti at the top of the box. The senior launched a rocket from 20 yards out into the upper-90 of the net, giving St. John’s a commanding 2-0 lead.
The goal marked the first of Agresti’s collegiate career, and her three points on the night (one goal, one assist) set a personal best. The senior’s performance epitomized the determination and resilience that have defined this St. John’s team throughout a challenging season.
Defensive Dominance: Bower Secures Fourth Shutout
While the seniors provided the offense, junior goalkeeper Kayla Bower anchored a stifling defensive effort that preserved the clean sheet and secured the victory.
Bower made three saves on the night, including a spectacular diving stop in the 55th minute that preserved St. John’s 2-0 lead. The shutout marked Bower’s fourth of the season and moved her season save total to 92—the most by a St. John’s goalkeeper since 2009.
DePaul logged seven second-half shots and finished with 16 total attempts, but the Red Storm defense was relentless, allowing only three shots on target. St. John’s backline, led by Reese Dunaway and Julia Lombardo, absorbed pressure and cleared danger repeatedly, ensuring Bower’s clean sheet remained intact.
The Blue Demons earned six corner kicks compared to St. John’s four, but the Red Storm’s organization and discipline in the defensive third neutralized DePaul’s set-piece opportunities.

First-Half Dominance Sets the Tone
St. John’s controlled the first half, outshooting DePaul 8-7 and maintaining 53% possession. The Red Storm’s high press disrupted DePaul’s buildup play, forcing turnovers and creating transition opportunities.
After McGlame’s opening goal in the ninth minute, St. John’s continued to press for a second. In the 11th minute, McGlame nearly doubled the lead with a shot that was saved by DePaul goalkeeper Mason Hillery.
Emily Riggins tested Hillery again in the 19th minute with a shot that sailed wide left, but St. John’s persistence paid off when Agresti delivered her stunning strike in the 25th minute.
The Red Storm’s season-high three assists on the night—credited to Agresti, Ruiz, and Monzon—highlighted the team’s improved chemistry and unselfish play. Head coach Ian Stone’s emphasis on ball movement and creating quality chances was evident throughout the first half.
Late in the opening period, sophomore Janelle Sylvestre nearly added a third goal when a DePaul miscue gave her a clean look on net. Her grounded strike was halted by a Blue Demons defender in a team save, keeping the score at 2-0 heading into halftime.
Second-Half Resilience
DePaul came out with renewed energy in the second half, outshooting St. John’s 7-2 and earning five corner kicks. The Blue Demons’ press forced the Red Storm into a more defensive posture, but St. John’s remained disciplined and organized.
Bower’s diving save in the 55th minute on a shot by Shayna da Silva proved to be the turning point of the second half. The stop energized the Red Storm defense and deflated DePaul’s momentum.
St. John’s nearly extended the lead in the 68th minute when McGlame forced another save from Hillery, but the Red Storm’s focus shifted to game management and protecting their two-goal advantage.
In the 84th minute, substitute Telma Steindórsdóttir tested Hillery with a shot that required a save, but St. John’s was content to see out the final minutes and secure the victory.
DePaul’s frustration boiled over in the 88th minute when Mia Veldman was issued a yellow card for a foul, but the Blue Demons could not find a breakthrough.
