New York City, NY — New York City FC’s bid for a dominant finish to the regular season fell short Saturday evening at Citi Field, as the Seattle Sounders escaped with a 2-1 victory on MLS Decision Day. Despite a second-half rally that produced an 82nd-minute equalizer, the Boys in Blue couldn’t hold on, surrendering a late header to Jackson Ragen in the 87th minute that proved decisive.
The loss marked a disappointing end to the regular season for NYCFC, though the result does little to diminish what has been a successful campaign. The club clinched a postseason berth for the ninth time in the last 10 seasons and will head into the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs with a second-youngest average roster in Major League Soccer.
A Sluggish Start, A Furious Finish
NYCFC dominated possession in the first half, controlling 50.4% of the ball and creating early opportunities through Alonso Martínez, whose opening shot was deflected behind for a corner. Seattle’s Jesús Ferreira tested the hosts on the counter, but Raul Gustavo’s defensive heroics kept the match scoreless through 45 minutes.
The most dramatic moment of the first half came in stoppage time when Justin Haak rattled the post with a curled effort from the top of the box—a chance that could have sent NYCFC into halftime with the lead.
“Today, unfortunately, we were not playing our A-game,” Head Coach Pascal Jansen said after the match. “It was slow and predictable. We emphasized the urgency that should be there, like we always try to have in our game. Throughout the game, there were only bits and pieces of urgency, way too little for the standard we’re after.”

Seattle Strikes First
The second half began with NYCFC pressing for an early breakthrough. Martínez made several dangerous runs in behind the Seattle defense, earning the hosts multiple corner opportunities. But Seattle’s counter-attacking threat remained potent, and the Sounders capitalized first.
In the 61st minute, Jordan Morris rose highest to meet a free kick from the right delivered by Albert Rusnák, heading home from the center of the box to give Seattle a 1-0 lead. The goal forced Jansen into immediate tactical adjustments, bringing on Julián Fernández, Jonathan Shore, and Agustín Ojeda in place of Hannes Wolf, Maxi Moralez, and Raul Gustavo.
The changes energized NYCFC’s attack. Ojeda was involved immediately, and in the 67th minute, a dangerous corner delivery found Thiago Martins in the area. Martins powered a header at goal, but Stefan Frei was equal to the task, making a crucial save.
Fernández Delivers the Equalizer
NYCFC’s persistence finally paid dividends in the 82nd minute when Nicolás Fernández Mercau found the back of the net. The move began when Máximo Carrizo pounced on a loose ball inside Seattle’s half and drove toward goal. He played the ball inside to Julián Fernández, who shifted it to Nico Fernández to convert via a deflection—his first goal in a home match for the club.
The equalizer appeared to have shifted momentum decisively in NYCFC’s favor. But the joy lasted just five minutes.
Ragen’s Late Blow
In the 87th minute, Jackson Ragen rose to meet an in-swinging corner from Danny Leyva and headed home from the center of the box to restore Seattle’s lead at 2-1. The late goal proved to be the match-winner, as NYCFC couldn’t find another breakthrough despite pushing hard in the final moments.
Alonso Martínez came closest to leveling the score in stoppage time, latching onto a pass in behind from Kevin O’Toole and getting away from his defender, but his effort flashed across goal and wide.
Playoff Focus Ahead
Despite the disappointing finish, NYCFC’s attention has already shifted to the postseason. The club clinched a top-four finish in the Eastern Conference and will face Charlotte FC in a best-of-three series in the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs Round One.
“Like I was saying, this was disappointing tonight,” Defender Kevin O’Toole said. “We’ll mourn this one for a little bit and then look forward to the series against Charlotte. We feel confident against that team. We put in a couple of good performances. The win at home was the most recent one during a super busy stretch of the season. We were more compact and a bit off the ball, but hit them strong in transition.”
Midfielder Justin Haak echoed that sentiment, emphasizing the club’s readiness for the playoffs despite the regular-season finale loss.
“Right now, I’m fully focused on the playoffs,” Haak said. “First, tonight was disappointing. But to be fair, even if we would have won, we’d still be in the same spot. It’s kind of a want to get it out of the way. Now we fully think Charlotte is a good matchup. They’re a strong team, and they’re very good at home. It’s going to be tough, and we’re ready for the matchup.”
Jansen’s Perspective
Jansen acknowledged that the loss stung, but he expressed confidence in his squad’s ability to elevate their performance when it matters most.
“No, I wouldn’t say that the attacking players have burnout since the regular season is ending,” Jansen said when asked about the team’s offensive output. “If they get five shots altogether, that’s not a lot. But I’m not worried about that part of the game because we’ve shown throughout the season what we’re capable of. I trust my guys that we’ll be ready once we head for Charlotte.”
He continued: “We just have to make sure we have the right focus and energy. Now the focus can go straight to the playoffs. Like I said, no concerns with league position or points. Now it’s do-or-die games, and my guys have shown they can handle those matches as well.”
Looking Ahead
NYCFC finished the regular season with an 11-6-0 home record and will head to Charlotte FC for the opening leg of their playoff series. The club’s second-youngest roster in MLS has proven its mettle throughout the season, and a disappointing Decision Day result is unlikely to derail its postseason aspirations.
The Boys in Blue will look to regroup and refocus as they prepare for the high-stakes matchup against Charlotte, where playoff football—and the promise of a deep run—awaits.
