Suffering a big loss while down to ten women on the pitch.
Lexington, KY- Fort Lauderdale United FC traveled to Lexington, Kentucky, for their next Gainbridge Super League matchup to face Lexington SC. The unbeaten streak to start the season came to an end when the club attempted to continue its points streak, but down by two, then a poor challenge put them behind the eight ball as they lost on the road by a final score of five goals to one.
Harmful ball rolls in
Lexington earned a throw-in deep in the Fort Lauderdale side of the pitch on the near side. As the ball was brought back into play, Taylor Aylman headed the ball towards Shea Moyer. She got a touch of it as the ball rolled away from Bella Hara and just inside the far post in the 17th minute
Strip and score
Fort Lauderdale went down by two as they were stripped of the ball at the far side at midfield. A quick pass to Addie McCain, as she was moving inside the area, and she found Sara Griffith making a run. The shot from Griffith beat Hara in the 25th minute.
Fort Lauderdale reduced numerically
Bella Hara put herself into no woman’s land as she came off her line, and well outside her area. She took down Shea Moyer about five yards outside her area, and the referee had no choice but to issue her a straight red card and put Fort Lauderdale down to ten women in the 27th minute.
Griffith on the double
Lexington earns a throw-in at the far side touchline. As the ball came towards the area, a Fort Lauderdale defender tried to head the ball away, but right at the feet of Griffith as she smashed it inside the far post for her second of the match in the 43rd minute.
Addie McCain scores against her friends
Alyssa Bourgeois retrieved the ball at the far side touchline and sent Emina Ekic into an attacking run. As she got toward the end line, Ekic pulled two defenders and the goalkeeper toward her, which left plenty of space for Addie McCain to score into an open net in the 67th minute.
Final goal for the home side
The third throw-in by Lexington SC that led to a goal as Tatiana Fung received the ball at the near side. She crossed it perfectly toward the far post, then Catherine Barry took a fabulous touch to bury it inside the back post in the 78th minute.
Consolation prize and thoughts
Fort Lauderdale ripped up the clean sheet as Lilly McCarthy scored in the 81st minute, as the club was handed its first loss of the season. A tough result after a strong start, but the hope is they can shake it off and head toward the next match.
“It’s never easy coming back from a deficit, especially after going down to ten players. The long throw was something that challenged us today, and we didn’t manage it as well as we needed to, which ultimately cost us. But this is our first loss of the season, and moments like this are part of the growth process.
The group understands that setbacks are opportunities to learn. Over the next 16 days, we’ll focus on tightening up those details, improving our organization in key moments, and continuing to build confidence in our identity and style of play,” said Head Coach Ali Rogers
Fort Lauderdale United’s next match will be on Saturday, November 1st, 7:30 PM Eastern as they host Brooklyn FC at Beyond Bancard Field. You can watch the match locally on WPLG Channel 10 or stream it on NBC’s Peacock app or website
