Late Heroics saves a point for the Canal Boys.
Panama City, Panama- This was a huge World Cup Qualifying match in Group A as both Panama and Suriname were fighting for the top spot and the automatic spot to qualify for the World Cup. While both are tied on points, Suriname leads by one goal scored. After 90 minutes and some stoppage time, the match ended in a scoreless draw.
Suriname strikes first
Panama botched their free kick as Suriname got possession and started to go on a counterattack. It turned into a two-on-one when Tjaronn Chery received the ball going down the far side touchline. Then a long, low cross to Richonell Margaret, who took the shot and just beat Orlando Mosquera inside the near post in the 21st minute.
Almost a penalty, but it stayed a free kick
A moment in the match as Suriname was defending Panama’s attack to equalize the match. The ball got to Panama’s EricDavis, who took the ball for a cross back inside the area. Coming in to defend was Suriname’s Djavan Anderson, who jumped, then spun in the air and used his right elbow to knock the ball away.
The issue for Anderson was whether he was inside the area during his attempt to defend. Referee Selvin Brown went to the VAR monitor to see where the infraction was, and it happened just outside the area. So, no penalty for Panama, just a free kick on the outside of the Suriname area, but it could’ve been called a penalty.
Panama explodes for the equalizer
After the long wait of the VAR review, the fourth official showed ten minutes of second half stoppage time on his board. Panama is desperate not to drop all three points, until the sixth minute of ten when Etienne Vaessen made a poor kick attempt that was kept in by the Panamanians.
Azarias Londono at the far side crossed the ball inside the area and hit Ismael Diaz in the chest. The ball rolled down his right leg, and somehow it rolled inside the far post, then into the back of the net, surprising Vaessen, who failed to cover his back post.
Fantastic match from both sides
Suriname tried their best to defend the rest of the match, but Panama was too determined to find that equalizer and saved themselves a point. But Suriname is still at the top of Group A, and with two matches remaining in the November International Window, we could see history being made very soon.
