Patriots Snap Buffalo’s 14-Game Home Win Streak with Thrilling 23-20 Victory

ORCHARD PARK, NY – The New England Patriots delivered one of their most impressive performances of the 2025 season, snapping the Buffalo Bills’ 14-game home winning streak with a dramatic 23-20 victory at Highmark Stadium on October 5, 2025. Rookie kicker Andy Borregales nailed a 52-yard field goal with 15 seconds remaining to seal the win and improve the Patriots to 3-2 on the season.

New England’s victory marked their first win in Buffalo since December 6, 2021, and gave them a perfect 2-0 record in AFC East road games this season. The Patriots also ended Buffalo’s remarkable 26-game streak of winning the turnover battle, forcing two fumbles and an interception while committing just one turnover themselves.

Diggs Dominates Against Former Team

Wide receiver Stefon Diggs torched his former team with 10 receptions for 146 yards, marking his second consecutive 100-yard receiving game. The performance was particularly sweet for Diggs, who spent four seasons with Buffalo before joining New England.

“A lot of young players played in that football game, in that environment,” Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel said postgame. “We have rookies on the left side of the line, a young running back, and a rookie kicker in those pressure moments. To be able to execute was huge.”

Diggs became the first Patriots player with back-to-back 100-yard receiving games in the same season since Julian Edelman in 2019. It was his 18th career game with at least 10 receptions, moving him closer to elite company alongside Davante Adams, Antonio Brown, Andre Johnson, and Keenan Allen.

Stevenson Breaks Through with Two Touchdowns

Running back Rhamondre Stevenson scored his first touchdowns of the season, rushing for a 4-yard TD in the third quarter and a 7-yard score in the fourth. The two-touchdown performance was his fifth career game with multiple rushing touchdowns and his first since October 27, 2024, against the New York Jets.

“We need everybody,” Vrabel said when asked about his patience with Stevenson after an early fumble. “Everybody’s role is vitally important. Rhamondre is an excellent protector of the other people with the ball, whether that’s in blitz pickup or chasing the ball and doing all those little things.”

Stevenson finished with 14 carries for 14 yards and two touchdowns, also adding two receptions for 13 yards. He even recorded his first career kickoff return—a 23-yard effort in the third quarter when filling in for injured Antonio Gibson.

Maye’s Poise Under Pressure

Quarterback Drake Maye completed 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and a 73.3% completion percentage, his fourth consecutive game with at least a 70% completion rate. The rookie signal-caller showed remarkable composure in the game’s final moments, engineering a seven-play, 37-yard drive that set up Borregales’ game-winning kick.

“You have to be put in those situations to be able to feel it and execute it,” Vrabel said of Maye’s clutch performance. “Even the last play, the third down play, we’re trying to catch one out there to the flat. He made a great decision to not lose yardage but also keep the clock going. Situationally, that’s where he’s starting to improve.”

Maye’s most impressive moment came on a second-quarter scramble where he nearly fell over but managed to fire a 14-yard completion to Diggs while off-balance.

“Oh my gosh, oh my gosh,” Vrabel said with a smile. “It was an 8-yard loss to a 12-yard gain. He’s continuing to grow and gain confidence, showing us, showing everybody, showing his team and himself the ability to operate in the pocket and off-schedule.”

Defensive Dominance and Turnover Battle

The Patriots’ defense forced three turnovers, including cornerback Marcus Jones’ first interception of the season—a third-quarter pick of Josh Allen at the New England 10-yard line that snuffed out a promising Buffalo drive.

Linebacker Robert Spillane forced a fumble on a short reception by Bills receiver Keon Coleman, recovered by safety Jaylinn Hawkins at the Buffalo 10-yard line in the first quarter. The turnover set up a 30-yard Borregales field goal.

Rookie defensive tackle Joshua Farmer recovered a Josh Allen fumble at the New England 47-yard line in the first quarter, marking his first career fumble recovery.

Spillane led the Patriots with eight total tackles, while linebacker Christian Elliss added six combined tackles. The defense held Buffalo to 118 rushing yards and forced Allen into an uncharacteristic two-turnover performance.

Special Teams Heroics

Borregales’ game-winning 52-yarder was his second field goal from 50-plus yards this season, having also connected on a 53-yarder at Miami on September 14. The rookie kicker finished 3-for-3 on field goals (30, 19, 52 yards) and made both extra point attempts.

“I was very comfortable going into the game,” Vrabel said. “I felt like they practiced, that they were in a good place. Can you keep doing it? Can you add the consistency, the preparation as this thing starts to wear on? This is a long haul here.”

Linebacker Jack Gibbens recorded three assisted special teams tackles for the second consecutive game, becoming the first Patriots player with back-to-back games of at least three special teams tackles since Matthew Slater in 2014.

Game Flow

The Patriots struck first with Borregales’ 30-yard field goal late in the first quarter after Spillane’s forced fumble. Buffalo answered with a 31-yard Matt Prater field goal in the second quarter to tie the game 3-3.

New England took a 6-3 halftime lead on Borregales’ 19-yard field goal as time expired in the second quarter, capping an 11-play, 69-yard drive.

Buffalo seized momentum early in the third quarter with a 10-play, 71-yard touchdown drive, finished by a 6-yard Josh Allen-to-Curtis Samuel connection. The Bills led 10-6 after Matt Prater’s extra point.

The Patriots responded immediately with a five-play, 74-yard scoring drive, capped by Stevenson’s 4-yard touchdown run. Borregales’ extra point gave New England a 13-10 lead.

Stevenson’s second touchdown—a 7-yard run—extended the Patriots’ lead to 20-10 early in the fourth quarter, finishing an impressive 11-play, 90-yard drive.

Buffalo rallied with an 8-play, 74-yard touchdown drive, as Allen found Keon Coleman for a 2-yard score to cut the deficit to 20-17. Prater’s 45-yard field goal with 2:17 remaining tied the game 20-20.

Maye and the Patriots offense took over at their own 29-yard line with 2:17 remaining. Seven plays and 37 yards later, Borregales trotted onto the field and drilled the game-winner with 15 seconds left.

Injury Updates

Running back Antonio Gibson left the game with an injury and did not return. Vrabel said postgame that Gibson and other players were still undergoing medical evaluations.

“Don’t have any update yet. We got back late. Some guys are still going through some tests and some medical evaluations,” Vrabel said. “Hopefully we’ll know more early this afternoon. We’ll keep you updated if we add anybody to the roster or we feel like we need guys at any position.”

Rookie running back TreVeyon Henderson saw increased opportunities in Gibson’s absence, carrying the ball six times for 24 yards.

Looking Ahead

The Patriots return home to face the New Orleans Saints in Week 6. New England will look to build on their first two-game winning streak since 2022 and improve to 4-2 on the season.

“Can you keep doing it? Can you add the consistency, the preparation as this thing starts to wear on and your body starts to feel less than ideal?” Vrabel said. “This is a long haul here. We’re just past the quarter pole and we’ve got a long way to go.”

The victory marked a statement win for the Patriots, proving they can compete with elite AFC East competition on the road in hostile environments. With Maye’s continued development, Diggs’ explosive playmaking, and a defense forcing turnovers, New England is building momentum at the right time.
