Red Bulls’ top striker called up for the Cameroon National Team

East Hanover, NJ- New York Red Bulls striker Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting has been called up for Cameroon’s last two World Cup Qualifiers in the October International Window to attempt either leaping over Cape Verde in Group D of African qualifying or put themselves into a better position to be in the top four of the eight second-place teams to reach the playoffs inside their confederation.

Choupo’s Red Bulls season

In his first year with the club, Choupo-Moting has scored seventeen goals (16 in league play and one in the U.S. Open Cup) in all competitions. It still wasn’t enough to get the Red Bulls to continue their consecutive playoff apperance streak, and he will now attempt to help Cameroon earn the necessary points to get over the line, but they are behind the eight ball as well.

Group D situation

Cameroon is currently in second place in Group D of CAF (Confederation of African Football) World Cup Qualifying with 15 points. Cape Verde is leading the group with 19 points, while Libya is behind Cameroon in third place with 14 points.

Cameroon’s last two opponents

In their last two matches, Cameroon will travel to Mauritius on Wednesday, October 8th, at 9:00 AM Eastern Time (5:00 PM Mauritius Time) and host Angola at home on Monday, October 13th, at 12:00 PM Eastern Time (5:00 PM Cameroon Time). All qualifiers will be streamed on ESPN+.

Possible second chance scenario

If Cape Verde wins Group D, Cameroon must finish in second place and have the hope that the current setup for the African Playoffs is in their favor. Currently, Gabon leads with 19 Points, followed by Congo DR with 16 points +7 Goal Differential, Madagascar in third with 16 points and a +7 Goal Differential, and Equatorial Guinea in fourth with 16 points and a +4 Goal Differential.

Burkina Faso and Cameroon are on the outside. Cameroon is in fifth with 15 points and a +10, while Burkina Faso is in sixth with 15 points and a +12. These last two matches for Cameroon and what happens outside of their games will be important, as they will watch what the rest of the continent does with their chances.

Win/Lose probability

QUALIFICATION ROUTES FOR CAMEROON

🎯 ROUTE 1: WIN GROUP D (Automatic Qualification)

Requirements:

  • Cameroon must win both remaining matches (6 points → 21 total)
  • Cape Verde must lose both remaining matches (0 points → 19 total)

Scenario: ✅ Cameroon finishes: 21 points
✅ Cape Verde finishes: 19 points
✅ Result: Cameroon wins Group D and qualifies automatically

Likelihood: ⚠️ DIFFICULT – Requires perfect results AND Cape Verde collapse

🎯 ROUTE 2: FINISH 2ND + BE TOP-4 RUNNER-UP (Playoff Qualification)

This is Cameroon’s most realistic path. The top 4 second-place teams across all 9 groups advance to a playoff round.

Current 2nd Place Standings (with 2 games left):

RankTeamGroupPtsGDP

2🇸🇳 SenegalB18+108*
3🇨🇩 DR CongoB16+78
4🇲🇬 MadagascarI16+78
5🇨🇲 CAMEROOND15+108
6🇧🇫 Burkina FasoA15+128
7🇺🇬 UgandaG15+58
8🇲🇿 MozambiqueG15-38
9🇳🇦 NamibiaH15+88

Note: Senegal is currently 1st in Group B but could finish 2nd

Cameroon is currently 5th among runners-up – just 1 spot outside the playoff zone

📊 SCENARIOS FOR CAMEROON TO REACH TOP-4 RUNNERS-UP

SCENARIO A: Win Both Matches (21 points)

If Cameroon wins both remaining games:

  • Final tally: 21 points, +10 GD (likely higher with wins)
  • Guarantee: ✅ QUALIFIED FOR PLAYOFF (would be among top-4 runners-up)
  • Why: 21 points would surpass all current 2nd-place teams except Gabon (19 pts)

Likelihood: 🟢 STRONG – Most reliable path

SCENARIO B: Win 1, Draw 1 (18 points)

If Cameroon gets 4 points (W+D):

  • Final tally: 19 points, +10 GD
  • Status: ✅ VERY LIKELY QUALIFIED FOR PLAYOFF
  • Why: 19 points would match Gabon and exceed most other runners-up

Depends on:

  • Other Group D results (must stay 2nd)
  • Results in Groups A, G, H, I (other 2nd-place teams)

Likelihood: 🟡 GOOD – Probably enough, but not guaranteed

SCENARIO C: Draw Both Matches (17 points)

If Cameroon draws both remaining games:

  • Final tally: 17 points, +10 GD
  • Status: ⚠️ UNCERTAIN – On the bubble

Depends on:

  • Results from Burkina Faso (Group A), Uganda/Mozambique (Group G), Namibia (Group H), Madagascar (Group I)
  • Goal difference could be decisive

Likelihood: 🟡 50/50 – Too close to call

SCENARIO D: Win 1, Lose 1 (18 points)

If Cameroon gets 3 points (W+L):

  • Final tally: 18 points, +10 GD (could drop with loss)
  • Status: ⚠️ RISKY – Borderline qualification

Depends heavily on:

  • Which match do they win/lose
  • Goal difference changes
  • Other groups’ results

Likelihood: 🟠 RISKY – Could go either way

SCENARIO E: 1 Draw, 1 Loss OR 2 Losses (≤16 points)

If Cameroon gets ≤1 point:

  • Final tally: 16 points or less
  • Status: ❌ LIKELY ELIMINATED
  • Why: Too many teams ahead with similar or better records

Likelihood: 🔴 ELIMINATION LIKELY

🎯 WHAT CAMEROON NEEDS FROM OTHER GROUPS

To secure a top-4 runner-up spot, Cameroon benefits if these teams drop points:

Teams to Watch (Current Threats):

  1. 🇬🇦 Gabon (19 pts, Group F) – Already very strong, hard to catch
  2. 🇨🇩 DR Congo (16 pts, Group B) – Direct competitor
  3. 🇲🇬 Madagascar (16 pts, Group I) – Direct competitor
  4. 🇧🇫 Burkina Faso (15 pts, Group A) – Level on points, better GD
  5. 🇺🇬 Uganda (15 pts, Group G) – Level on points, worse GD
  6. 🇳🇦 Namibia (15 pts, Group H) – Level on points, worse GD

Best-case scenario: DR Congo, Madagascar, Burkina Faso all drop points in final 2 games

⚽ REMAINING FIXTURES (Hypothetical)

Cameroon’s final 2 matches will determine their fate. Assuming typical group stage scheduling:

Match 9: Cameroon vs. [Group D opponent]
Match 10: Cameroon vs. [Group D opponent]

Likely opponents: Libya, Angola, Mauritius, or Eswatini

📈 PROBABILITY ASSESSMENT

ScenarioPointsPlayoff Qualification Chance
Win both21🟢 95%+ (virtually certain)
W + D19🟢 85% (very likely)
2 Draws17🟡 60% (decent chance)
W + L18🟡 70% (good chance)
D + L16🟠 30% (risky)
2 Losses15🔴 10% (unlikely)

🏆 FINAL VERDICT: CAMEROON’S REALISTIC PATH

✅ MOST LIKELY SCENARIO:

Cameroon finishes 2nd in Group D and qualifies for the playoff round as a top-4 runner-up

📋 TO GUARANTEE PLAYOFF SPOT:

  • Win both remaining matches → 21 points → ✅ Playoff secured
  • Win 1, Draw 1 → 19 points → ✅ Playoff very likely

⚠️ DANGER ZONE:

  • 2 Draws or worse → ≤17 points → ⚠️ Depends on other results

🎯 WHAT CAMEROON CONTROLS:

✅ Beat Libya and Angola in final 2 games
✅ Maximize goal difference
✅ Avoid losses at all costs

🔮 WHAT CAMEROON CAN’T CONTROL:

❌ Cape Verde’s results (for winning group)
❌ Other groups’ runner-up results
❌ Tiebreaker scenarios

🚨 BOTTOM LINE:

Cameroon’s fate is in their own hands:

  • 6 points (2 wins) = Playoff qualification virtually guaranteed
  • 4 points (W+D) = Playoff qualification very likely
  • ≤3 points = Risky and dependent on other results

The Indomitable Lions need to win their remaining matches to secure their World Cup dream! 🇨🇲⚽🦁
