No. 12 Bulldogs Respond with Dominant Performance After Alabama Loss

ATHENS, GA — Gunner Stockton and the No. 12 Georgia Bulldogs wasted no time showing they had moved on from a tough loss to Alabama, delivering a convincing 35-14 victory over Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at Sanford Stadium.

Stockton and receiver Dillon Bell each had a pair of touchdown runs, leading the Bulldogs (4-1, 2-1 SEC) to their 16th consecutive victory over the Wildcats. Georgia finally got off to the quick start they’d been searching for, capping its first two possessions with scoring runs from quarterback Stockton.

There were no signs of anyone still dwelling on what happened a week ago, when Alabama won 24-21 to snap Georgia’s 33-game home winning streak.

“It feels great. It’s hard to win in the SEC and you don’t realize that until you’re in it,” head coach Kirby Smart said. “It’s hard to go on the road and win and our guys came out with good juice today. I think we scored the first two or three drives. That was big—setting the tone, getting off the field some on defense was huge. I think that’s a big success and a big step in the right direction for us.”

Fast Start Fuels Bulldogs Bounce-Back Victory

After falling behind 7-0 in the first two SEC games this year and trailing after the first quarter (21-7 at Tennessee, 7-0 vs. Alabama) and at halftime (21-17 at Tennessee, 24-14 vs. Alabama), Georgia posted a 14-0 lead after the first quarter today and led 21-7 at halftime on its way to a win.

The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff 75 yards on 12 plays for a 7-0 lead with 8:51 left in the first quarter. Then, they drove 96 yards on 13 plays with another touchdown for a 14-0 advantage with 55 seconds left in the first quarter. Georgia finished an impressive 9-for-12 on third downs today.

Georgia improved to 17-3 after a loss under Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs have not lost back-to-back games in the regular season since 2016 and have not dropped two in a row since the 2018 postseason.

Stockton Leads Efficient Offensive Attack

Redshirt junior quarterback Gunner Stockton orchestrated Georgia’s offense with precision and poise, finishing the day 15-for-23 for 196 yards with one passing touchdown, two rushing touchdowns, and one interception in three quarters of work.

Stockton opened the scoring with a 7-yard touchdown dive at the pylon, capping a methodical 12-play, 75-yard drive that consumed 6:09 of the first quarter. On Georgia’s next possession, he led another impressive march—96 yards over 13 plays in 5:15—finishing it himself with a 6-yard touchdown run after a nifty fake on linebacker Sam Greene.

The two rushing touchdowns marked the second time this season Stockton has posted multiple rushing scores, as he also had two in the season-opening win over Marshall.

“I felt more comfortable. I think it was about practice,” Stockton said. “After last week, we just went to work, and I think it paid off.”

When asked about the team’s focus after the Alabama loss, Stockton emphasized the importance of moving forward quickly.

“Timing down a fast game and getting back to work is the biggest part, and not taking a day for granted,” he said.

Smart praised offensive coordinator Mike Bobo’s game plan and Stockton’s ability to use his legs effectively.

“I thought Mike called a good game. Gunner plays better when he gets a couple runs in and loosens up and feels good,” Smart said. “He’s getting a little beat up, he’s banged up today but he had two third down conversion runs around the 50-yard line that were huge.”

Redshirt freshman quarterback Ryan Puglisi (3-4, 49 yards, 1 INT) came in for the final drive of the third quarter and finished the game.

Offensive Line Resilience Despite Injury

The Bulldogs’ offensive line showed remarkable resilience after losing left tackle Monroe Freeling to a leg injury in the first quarter. Stockton paid tribute to right guard Micah Morris, who battled through adversity.

“Micah’s a great guy, a good friend. You know, he’ll do anything for you. He’ll fight and claw for every game,” Stockton said. “It means the world for this team for him to push through.”

Bell’s Versatility on Full Display

Dillon Bell, a receiver who has also played running back, showcased his versatility with a pair of 3-yard touchdown runs—one on an end around and another on a reverse. The two scores give him five rushing touchdowns for his career.

Bell also led the team with four receptions for 68 yards, including a spectacular 33-yard catch down the left sideline that set up Stockton’s touchdown pass to Cash Jones.

Georgia took a 21-7 lead on Bell’s first three-yard run that finished a six-play, 40-yard drive in 2:49, proving to be a matchup nightmare for Kentucky’s defense throughout the afternoon.

Bowens Makes First Career Start Count

Redshirt freshman Chauncey Bowens made his first career start and led the team in rushing with 15 attempts for 70 yards. His physical running style helped Georgia control the clock and wear down Kentucky’s defense.

Nine different Bulldogs had a catch today. Junior Zachariah Branch had four catches for 18 yards, while freshman tight end Elyiss Williams posted a career-high three receptions for 48 yards.

Dominant First Half Sets the Tone

Georgia had trailed at halftime in its two previous games, but there were no such issues against Kentucky. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

After Kentucky pulled within 14-7 early in the second quarter on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Cutter Boley to tight end Josh Kattus (75 yards on four plays in 1:34), Georgia answered immediately. Bell’s first touchdown run with 2:45 remaining in the half pushed the lead back to two scores.

Kentucky had an opportunity to cut into Georgia’s lead before halftime, but poor clock management and a missed 26-yard field goal by Jacob Kauwe left the Bulldogs comfortably ahead 21-7 at the break.

Second-Half Surge Puts Game Away

Georgia’s defense forced a fumble on Kentucky’s opening possession of the third quarter, with junior CJ Allen forcing and recovering the loose ball at the Wildcats’ 38-yard line with 13:18 left in the third quarter. It was Allen’s first career caused fumble and fumble recovery. Five plays later, Bell punched in his second touchdown to extend the lead to 28-7.

The Bulldogs went up 35-7 with 4:23 left in the third quarter following a nine-play, 71-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 16-yard pass to Cash Jones on third-and-goal. It was Jones’ first score of the year.

Kentucky added a late consolation touchdown with 1:51 remaining in the fourth quarter on a 5-yard pass from Boley to Kendrick Law, completing a 23-yard drive after an interception to make it 35-14. The outcome had long been decided.

Georgia’s Defensive Dominance

The Bulldogs turned in another strong performance in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Despite losing left tackle Monroe Freeling to a leg injury in the first quarter (Freeling was one of Georgia’s captains along with Lawson Luckie, Daylen Everette, and Quintavius Johnson), Georgia’s offensive line paved the way for 180 rushing yards.

Georgia tallied 35 points, gaining 425 yards (180 rushing, 245 passing) on 71 plays in the victory.

Defensively, Georgia held Kentucky to 14 points and 270 yards of total offense (45 rushing, 225 passing) on 64 plays. The Bulldogs limited Kentucky to just 45 yards rushing on 22 attempts and collected their first fumble recovery of the season.

The leading tacklers were junior CJ Allen and sophomore Justin Williams with six apiece. Allen notched his second sack of the year plus his first career caused fumble and fumble recovery. Redshirt freshman Nnamdi Ogboko collected his first career sack.

Smart emphasized the defense’s improvement on third down as a key factor in the victory.

“It was a huge emphasis. We are trying to do some different things and give some different looks and make some plays on the ball,” Smart said. “I thought we did affect the quarterback better today and we’re going to have to grow in that area to get where we want to go.”

Ellis Robinson IV’s fourth-quarter interception in the end zone with 4:02 left in the contest thwarted Kentucky’s best scoring opportunity of the second half, preserving Georgia’s commanding lead. It was Robinson’s second career interception and second of the year.

Allen’s Relentless Approach

Junior inside linebacker CJ Allen, who led the team with six tackles while forcing and recovering a fumble and recording a sack, emphasized the importance of maintaining intensity throughout the game.

“You have to keep your foot on the gas. It was nice to start off with the offense scoring,” Allen said. “We are just trying to get the ball back to the offense. We are trying to get it back to them as soon as possible.”

When asked if the defense played up to standard, Allen was honest about areas needing improvement.

“There is a lot of stuff to clean up. We had a couple of long drives standing down in the fourth quarter,” he said. “We just have to go back home to see what we can fix.”

Allen praised Kentucky’s physicality and acknowledged the challenge they presented.

“We came into this game knowing it was going to be a physical game. Kentucky is a great team, you know. They have always been,” Allen said. “We came in knowing it was going to be a physical match.”

Turnover Battle Favors Bulldogs

Kentucky got seven points off two Bulldog miscues. Opponents only have 16 points off seven Bulldog turnovers this year.

Georgia notched its first fumble recovery of the year as CJ Allen got it after forcing it, leading to a touchdown and a 28-7 lead. Ellis Robinson IV’s interception was his second of the year. Georgia is now -2 in turnover margin but continues to limit opponents’ scoring opportunities off turnovers.

Special Teams Brilliance

Receiver London Humphreys set up Georgia’s third touchdown with a brilliant play on special teams. All-America punter Brett Thorson sent a booming 60-yard punt toward the left pylon, and Humphreys tiptoed along the goal line to bat it out of bounds at the Kentucky 1-yard line. It was Thorson’s fourth punt of 50+ yards this season and seventh played inside the 20 out of 12 total on the year.

The Wildcats went three-and-out after the exceptional punt, and Georgia got the ball back at the Kentucky 40. Taking advantage of the short field, the Bulldogs needed only six plays to reach the end zone on Bell’s first touchdown run.

Junior placekicker Peyton Woodring tallied five points on PATs plus took care of the kickoffs. Junior Zachariah Branch had one punt return for 15 yards.

Fourth-Down Aggression

Up 35-7 with 12:31 left in the contest, Georgia failed to convert a fourth-and-1 at the Kentucky 11, turning the ball over on downs. The Bulldogs are 5-for-7 on fourth down this year, showing Smart’s willingness to be aggressive when the situation calls for it.

Offensive Line Shuffle Continues

Georgia started its fifth different offensive line of the season as a pair of true freshmen in Dontrell Glover (RG) and Juan Gaston Jr. (RT) comprised the right side. This marks the first time since 2008 that the Bulldogs started two true freshmen on the offensive line. That year, Cordy Glenn (G) and Ben Jones (C) started the final seven games of the season.

Despite the youth and shuffling, Georgia’s offensive line dominated in the trenches, opening holes for 180 rushing yards and protecting Stockton effectively throughout the game.

Stoops Addresses Future Speculation and Team Morale

Kentucky head coach Mark Stoops, the longest-tenured coach in the SEC, angrily denied postgame reports that he has talked with school officials about a possible buyout.

“I’d hate to give anything like that legs,” he said. “There’s zero chance I’m walking away. There’s no quit in me, so that’s unequivocally 100% false. Anyone who tells you that is lying.”

In his 13th season, Stoops has a record of 69-76 overall and 28-65 in the SEC. The Wildcats have now gone 3-9 since a huge upset at Mississippi early last season, with no wins against Power Four opponents.

“I don’t want to address that crap no more,” Stoops added.

Despite the negativity surrounding the program, Stoops emphasized the importance of keeping his team engaged and focused on the remainder of the season.

“The guys, I just told them again, I mean, they care. You know, they work hard and their preparation is important to us,” Stoops said. “You think we’re the only ones? You know, nobody feels sorry for you in this league. I mean, throughout the country, you think we’re the only people? I mean, that happens. So you’ve got to block it out, go back to work, and, you know, that’s what matters to me.”

Stoops remained optimistic about his team’s prospects moving forward.

“I told them it’s about continuing to stay very positive. I mean, we’re not even halfway through the season yet. We’ve played five, so we’ve got seven games left,” he said.

Boley Shows Growth Despite Loss

Kentucky quarterback Cutter Boley completed 25 of 42 passes for 225 yards with two touchdowns and one interception, but the Wildcats simply made too many mistakes to have any chance of an upset.

Stoops praised his freshman quarterback’s development despite the loss.

“I think we got better in certain ways today, you know, there were good periods in time. I think we threw the ball 40, 42 times, and certainly they’re going to create pressure,” Stoops said. “They’re great defensively always, you know, with their coverage and getting pressure on you. I felt like times today we had some decent time. We got rid of the football on time, you know, we got some completions. In particular, in the first half, you know, I think our completion percentage was a little higher and, you know, I wish we would have kept at least three there at the end of the half. It gave us a little momentum, but I thought we made some strides, and I thought Cutter grew up today.”

Boley expressed confidence in offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan’s play calling and the team’s offensive execution.

“We just have to keep working on everything we’re doing in the pass game and the run game. I really like the way he called it today,” Boley said. “I was really comfortable with everything we were running. We got into a flow better than we had been in the past.”

When asked about the deep passing game, Boley took responsibility for creating more opportunities.

“I just have to keep giving my guys chances. I feel like I gave a lot of our guys better chances to make a play on the ball downfield,” he said. “Just have to keep giving them better chances to make a play.”

The freshman quarterback also addressed the external noise surrounding Coach Stoops and the program.

“At the end of the day, if you’re a grown man, you have to realize that nothing outside of this locker room matters,” Boley said. “I feel like we have a lot of grown men around this team, and nothing else on Saturdays except these guys matters.”

Kentucky’s Defensive Struggles Continue

Senior defensive back Jordan Lovett acknowledged the Wildcats’ defensive shortcomings, particularly on critical downs.

“We just got to get off on second down, you know, miscommunications, misfits, too many misalignments, too many MAs (missed assignments) I like to call it,” Lovett said. “You know, we’ve got to do better. I got to play better as a senior. We just got to do better as a defense.”

Lovett emphasized the need for senior leadership to step up moving forward.

“Like I said, we got to get off the critical downs, you know. It’s really the critical downs that’s killing us,” he said. “And as a senior lay group—like you know, me, Kahlil Saunders, Alex Afari, and all the rest of the leaders—we got to step up.”

Despite the loss, Lovett gave credit to Georgia’s coaching and execution.

“Shout out to Kirby, to be honest with you, he was a great play caller. Shout out to Georgia,” Lovett said. “But you know, we got to step up as a defense. We’ve got to be better and get ourselves into those starting lineups as well.”

Poor time management at the end of the first half, a fumble on their first possession of the third quarter, and Kauwe’s missed 26-yard field goal allowed the Bulldogs to pull away.

Kendrick Law led Kentucky’s receiving corps with six catches for 64 yards and a touchdown, while running back Seth McGowan rushed for 44 yards on 11 carries.

Statistical Dominance

Time of Possession: Georgia controlled the clock for 33:38 compared to Kentucky’s 26:22, winning the possession battle by more than seven minutes.

Third-Down Efficiency: The Bulldogs converted 8 of 12 third-down attempts (67%), while Kentucky managed just 3 of 11 (27%).

Red Zone Perfection: Georgia scored touchdowns on five of six red zone trips, while Kentucky managed just one touchdown in three red zone opportunities.

Turnover Battle: Georgia forced two turnovers (one fumble, one interception) while committing two interceptions of their own.

Historic Series Dominance By Bulldogs

With today’s 35-14 win, Georgia leads the Kentucky series 65-12-2 including winning the past 16 meetings. This is the second-longest winning streak against an opponent in school history, trailing only the 22 in a row against Mercer from 1892-1941.

The Bulldogs haven’t lost to Kentucky since 2009, extending their series winning streak to 16 games. Georgia also improved to 4-1 on the season and hasn’t lost back-to-back games in the regular season since 2016.

The victory was Georgia’s first game without trailing at halftime this season, a welcome development after struggling with slow starts in previous weeks.

Homecoming Victory

Georgia celebrated Homecoming this week, and at halftime, Jacob Harper and Kate Hacker were named the Homecoming King and Queen. Harper is a fourth-year agricultural and environmental science communication and journalism major from Pelham, Ga. Hacker is a fourth-year marketing major from Cartersville, Ga.

The Bulldogs improved to 83-18-2 on Homecoming including winning nine straight homecoming games.

Key Takeaways

Kentucky: The Wildcats (2-3, 0-3 SEC) remain winless in conference play and face an uphill battle to reach bowl eligibility. After an off week, they’ll host No. 9 Texas on October 18 in another stiff challenge.

Georgia: The Bulldogs demonstrated the physical, resilient football that Smart demands. The offensive line dominated despite losing Freeling and starting two true freshmen on the right side. The defense held Kentucky to minimal rushing production while forcing critical turnovers. Georgia travels to Auburn next Saturday for the renewal of the Deep South’s oldest rivalry.

What’s Next

Georgia (4-1, 2-1 SEC) will travel to Auburn (3-2, 0-2 SEC) with kickoff at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. The Tigers enjoyed an open date today after road losses to No. 11 Oklahoma (24-17) and No. 9 Texas A&M (16-10) the previous two weeks.

Kentucky, meanwhile, will use their bye week to regroup before hosting No. 9 Texas in what promises to be another difficult test for Stoops and his struggling Wildcats.
