TAMPA BAY, FL – The Philadelphia Eagles proved their championship mettle Sunday, using creative variations of their signature tush push and another special teams touchdown to defeat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 31-25 at Raymond James Stadium. The victory keeps the defending Super Bowl champions undefeated at 4-0.
Fake Tush Push Fuels Eagles Attack
Saquon Barkley’s 6-yard touchdown run on a fake tush push epitomized Philadelphia’s offensive creativity. With the Eagles lined up in their signature short-yardage formation, Jalen Hurts handed off to Barkley instead of keeping the ball, catching Tampa Bay completely off guard.
“Great call,” Barkley said of offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo’s decision. “It’s an answer we have. It definitely makes teams more aware of it now.”
The touchdown extended Philadelphia’s lead to 31-13 in the third quarter after Bucky Irving’s fumble gave the Eagles excellent field position.
Special Teams Strike Again
Philadelphia’s special teams unit continued their dominant season with another game-changing play. Cameron Latu broke through Tampa Bay’s protection and blocked Riley Dixon’s punt, with Sydney Brown scooping up the loose ball and returning it 35 yards for a touchdown.
The blocked punt gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead and marked the second consecutive week Philadelphia’s special teams scored a touchdown.
Hurts Showcases Versatility
Jalen Hurts demonstrated his dual-threat capability, throwing two touchdown passes while rushing for 62 yards on nine carries. His 29-yard scramble set up Philadelphia’s second touchdown, followed by an underhanded 2-yard scoring pass to Dallas Goedert.
“It’s a great team win,” Hurts said. “Another gritty win. We know this has been a challenging environment. I’m proud of the way we competed.”
Hurts completed 15 of 24 passes for 130 yards and two touchdowns without throwing an interception.
Mayfield’s Explosive Response
Baker Mayfield, playing with an injured biceps, threw touchdown passes of 77 and 72 yards to keep Tampa Bay competitive. His 77-yard strike to rookie Emeka Egbuka marked the longest catch by a rookie in franchise history.
“We talked about starting fast, and we quite obviously did the opposite,” Mayfield said. “You can’t expect to beat a team of that caliber when you start slow like that.”
Despite the explosive plays, Mayfield threw a crucial interception in the fourth quarter when Tampa Bay was driving for a potential tying score.

Record-Setting Field Goal
Chase McLaughlin’s 65-yard field goal as time expired in the first half set an NFL record for the longest field goal in an outdoor stadium. The kick just missed tying Justin Tucker’s overall NFL record of 66 yards.
“We didn’t know he had that in range,” said Bucs coach Todd Bowles. “We thought he’d be close, but for him to hit that was big.”
Defensive Turnovers Prove Decisive
Philadelphia’s defense forced two crucial turnovers in the second half. Kelee Ringo recovered Irving’s fumble at the Tampa Bay 25-yard line, setting up Barkley’s fake tush push touchdown.
Later, Jihaad Campbell intercepted Mayfield’s pass in the red zone with Tampa Bay trailing by just eight points, effectively ending the Buccaneers’ comeback hopes.
Second-Half Struggles
The Eagles managed just minus-1 yard of offense in the second half, with Hurts going 0-for-8 passing after intermission. Despite the offensive struggles, Philadelphia’s early lead and defensive stops proved sufficient.
“Obviously, he’s got to take better care of the ball,” Bowles said of Mayfield’s turnovers. “Baker will be the first one to tell you that.”
Injury Concerns
Both teams dealt with significant injuries throughout the contest. Philadelphia lost right tackle Lane Johnson (shoulder) and defensive tackle Jalen Carter (shoulder) during the game.
Tampa Bay saw multiple players exit, including edge rusher Haason Reddick (stinger), cornerbacks Jamel Dean (hip/groin) and Benjamin Morrison (hamstring), and defensive lineman Greg Gaines (pec).
Key Returns
The Buccaneers welcomed back All-Pro left tackle Tristan Wirfs and standout wide receiver Chris Godwin for their season debuts. Godwin finished with three catches for 26 yards in his return from injury.
“It was just great to see him out there,” Bowles said of Godwin’s return. “It was a lift-me-up for everybody.”
Championship Resilience
Philadelphia’s victory extended their remarkable run to 20 wins in 21 games. Their only loss during this span came against Washington last December when Hurts left with a concussion in the first half.
The Eagles demonstrated championship-level resilience, weathering Tampa Bay’s explosive plays and late rally to maintain their perfect record.
Looking Ahead
Tampa Bay (3-1) will look to rebound when they visit Seattle next Sunday. The Buccaneers must address their special teams issues, having allowed blocked kicks in three consecutive weeks.
Philadelphia hosts Denver next Sunday, seeking to extend their undefeated start while managing key injuries to their offensive and defensive lines.
