MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Freshman quarterback Drake Lindsay threw for 324 yards and three touchdowns, leading Minnesota to a dramatic 31-28 comeback victory over Rutgers at Huntington Bank Stadium. The Golden Gophers (3-1, 1-0 Big Ten) overcame a 14-0 deficit to secure their first conference win of the season.
Freshman Steps Up in Crucial Moment
Playing without their top two running backs, Minnesota turned to Lindsay’s arm to control the game. The freshman completed 31 of 41 passes, including an impressive 23 of 28 in the second half as the Gophers methodically erased their early deficit.
“They just told me they were going to put it in my hands and we’re going to win this game,” Lindsay said of his halftime conversations with the coaching staff. “That puts a lot of confidence in the offense and in me, knowing that they’re putting it on me and our guys to go make plays, and we went and did it.”
Game-Winning Drive
Trailing 28-24 with 6:24 remaining, Lindsay orchestrated the decisive scoring drive. The freshman went 6-for-7 for 72 yards, capping the drive with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Javon Tracy that gave Minnesota the lead for good.
Tracy finished with six catches for 54 yards and the game-winning score, while Jalen Smith led all receivers with 103 yards on four catches, including a spectacular 78-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
Kaliakmanis Returns to Minneapolis
Former Minnesota quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis, who spent three years in the program and started for the Gophers in 2023, threw for 249 yards and two touchdowns for Rutgers. However, his return was marred by crucial mistakes, including an interception and a costly fumbled snap in the final drive.
“Honestly, miscommunication,” Kaliakmanis said of the botched snap that derailed Rutgers’ final scoring opportunity. “I’ve got to be better.”

Raymond’s Career Performance
Rutgers running back Antwan Raymond delivered a career-high 161 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. Raymond consistently broke through Minnesota’s defense, which had allowed just 124 rushing yards total in their first three games.
“I think every week we anticipate running the ball well,” said Raymond, who has scored two touchdowns in each of his last four games.
Raymond’s 23-yard touchdown run with 18 seconds left in the first half gave Rutgers a 21-14 advantage at the break.
Second-Half Surge
Minnesota’s offense found its rhythm after intermission, with Lindsay’s precision passing attack controlling the tempo. The Gophers scored 17 second-half points while limiting Rutgers to just seven.
Le’Meke Brockington contributed five catches for 41 yards and a touchdown, while Drew Biber added four receptions for 41 yards in the comeback effort.
Defensive Pressure Makes Difference
Minnesota’s defense applied consistent pressure on Kaliakmanis, recording seven sacks compared to Rutgers’ two. The pass rush proved crucial in disrupting the Scarlet Knights’ rhythm throughout the contest.
Kerry Brown intercepted Kaliakmanis in the second quarter, returning the ball 28 yards to set up Minnesota’s second touchdown of the game.
Missed Opportunities Haunt Rutgers
The Scarlet Knights (3-2, 0-2 Big Ten) struggled with execution in crucial moments. Rutgers missed two field goals, including a 56-yard attempt by Dane Pizzaro that would have tied the game with 20 seconds remaining.
“Right now we’re in a situation where we’re struggling to consistently execute as a team,” said Rutgers coach Greg Schiano. “Consistency is, in my experience, the last thing that comes. So we just have to stick to it, and it’ll come.”
Ground Game Struggles
Without their top two running backs, Minnesota managed just 35 rushing yards on 17 attempts. Fame Ijeboi led the ground attack with 37 yards and one touchdown on 12 carries.
The Gophers compensated by utilizing Lindsay’s short passing game as an extension of their running attack, completing quick strikes to control possession and field position.
Critical Final Drive
Rutgers had one final opportunity to tie the game, taking over at their own 25-yard line with 3:19 remaining. Kaliakmanis quickly moved the Scarlet Knights into field goal range with four completions in five attempts.
However, on second-and-10 from the Minnesota 26, Kaliakmanis wasn’t ready for a shotgun snap. The ball rolled past the 40-yard line before he could recover it, pushing Rutgers out of comfortable field goal range.
Big Ten Implications
The victory gives Minnesota momentum as they prepare for a challenging road trip to face top-ranked Ohio State next week. The Gophers avoided starting their Big Ten schedule with a disappointing home loss.
For Rutgers, the defeat continues a frustrating pattern – the Scarlet Knights have now led in the fourth quarter of both their Big Ten losses this season.
Looking Ahead
Minnesota will face their biggest test of the season when they travel to Columbus to battle the undefeated Buckeyes on October 4. The Gophers will need Lindsay to continue his impressive development against elite competition.
Rutgers will seek to bounce back when they visit Washington on October 10, looking to avoid an 0-3 start in conference play.
