Quarterback throws four touchdown passes as Scarlet Knights improve to 2-0 for the fifth consecutive season
PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers quarterback Athan Kaliakmanis delivered a career-defining performance, throwing four touchdown passes to lead the Scarlet Knights to a commanding 45-17 victory over Miami (Ohio) on Saturday night at SHI Stadium.

The win, delayed 55 minutes due to severe weather, improved Rutgers to 2-0 for the fifth consecutive season under head coach Greg Schiano and extended their perfect record in regular-season non-conference games to 14-0 since Schiano’s return.
Kaliakmanis completed 26 of 36 passes for 259 yards, becoming the first Rutgers quarterback to throw four touchdown passes since Chris Laviano in 2015. His primary target, wide receiver Ian Strong, had a breakout performance with career highs of nine receptions, 116 yards, and two touchdowns.
“Practice, you know, I just believe so much in cumulative repetitions of doing things correctly,” Schiano said postgame. “It becomes more and more second nature, and some of those throws and catches today with Athan and Ian had a tremendous game.”
Defensive Playmaker Changes Momentum
The game’s turning point came in the second quarter when defensive back Bo Mascoe intercepted Miami quarterback Dequan Finn and returned it 68 yards – the seventh-longest interception return in program history. The pick set up a touchdown that extended Rutgers’ lead to 17-7.
“I thought it was a great call by Coach Smith,” Schiano noted. “They had worn us out a little bit on a couple routes to the flat, and Coach Smith changed the coverage and put Bo [in position], but you’ve got to make the play, and Bo did just that.”

Balanced Offensive Attack
Running back Antwan Raymond complemented the aerial assault with 82 rushing yards and two touchdowns, including a game-sealing 35-yard run in the fourth quarter. The Scarlet Knights controlled the game with 421 total yards and dominated time of possession 39:06 to 20:54.
Wide receiver KJ Duff added six catches for 71 yards and a touchdown, while DT Sheffield contributed five receptions for 37 yards and a score. The offensive efficiency was evident in their third-down conversion rate, going 7-for-10 after struggling in that area the previous week.
Miami Shows Fight Despite Deficit
Miami (Ohio) quarterback Dequan Finn completed 14 of 23 passes for 251 yards but was hampered by an interception and three sacks. Wide receiver Keith Reynolds led the RedHawks with seven catches for 120 yards, including a 69-yard completion that set up their lone third-quarter touchdown.
“We knew they’re really good on offense,” Miami coach Chuck Martin said. “We knew we’d have to score way more points than last week. Obviously, offensively, we did some better things, made some big plays, but we got to stick it in there if you want to beat a Big Ten team on the road.”
Record-Setting Performance
Kaliakmanis’ four touchdown passes marked several milestones. He has now thrown a touchdown pass in eight consecutive games dating back to last season, the longest streak by a Scarlet Knight since Gary Nova’s 12-game run in 2012. The performance also pushed his career passing yards at Rutgers to 3,207, making him the 13th player in program history to reach 3,000 passing yards.
Placekicker Jai Patel extended his school record to 16 consecutive field goals made, dating back to last season, with a 39-yard attempt in the second quarter.
Looking Ahead
The victory sets up Rutgers for continued momentum as they prepare to host Norfolk State on September 13 for Band Day at SHI Stadium. The Scarlet Knights are 4-0 all-time against Norfolk State, last meeting in 2015.
For Miami (Ohio), now 0-2, the focus shifts to building on the offensive improvements while addressing defensive consistency issues that plagued them throughout the contest.
The 45,981 fans in attendance witnessed a statement win that showcased Rutgers’ potential in Schiano’s continued rebuild, with the offense firing on all cylinders and the defense making timely plays when needed most.
Final Score: Rutgers 45, Miami (Ohio) 17 Next Game: Norfolk State at Rutgers, September 13, 3:30 PM
