MINNEAPOLIS, MN– The Minnesota Vikings are breaking new ground in professional football. They will become the first NFL team to play consecutive games in two different countries. This historic achievement puts them in uncharted territory as they prepare for games in Dublin and London.
Historic Double Header
Never before has an NFL franchise faced this unique challenge. The Vikings will play the Pittsburgh Steelers at Dublin’s Croke Park on September 28th. One week later, they face the Cleveland Browns at London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on October 5th.
This marks the NFL’s first regular-season game hosted in Ireland. The Vikings enter with impressive international credentials. They’re 5-0 in regular-season UK games and 9-0 when including global exhibitions.
Behind-the-Scenes Planning
Head Coach Kevin O’Connell expressed confidence in his organization’s preparation. “My confidence level that we’re going to come out of this, saying that it not only can be done, but it can be done the right way, is due to these folks next to me,” he said about his support staff.
The Vikings have assembled a multidimensional team working for months on logistics. Departments, including facilities, travel, equipment, player health, and nutrition, have coordinated every detail.
Travel Strategy
The team departs Thursday night on a Delta charter flight. They’ll arrive on Friday morning in Dublin and practice at the IRFU High Performance Centre. This compressed timeline prevents major circadian rhythm disruptions before Sunday’s game.
Tyler Williams, Vice President of Player Health and Performance, designed this approach. “We really just stuck to our fundamental principles and said, ‘What allows us to peak on game day when we travel?'” Williams explained.
Creating a Familiar Environment
The Vikings are shipping American favorites overseas to maintain player comfort. Ranch dressing, barbecue sauce, and specific cereals are among the items sent ahead. They’re planning approximately 7,000 meals during the trip.
Head Performance Dietitian Ben Hawkins visited facilities early to coordinate with local chefs. “Our goal is to give the players the best home away from home,” Hawkins said. “Players can walk into the meal room in Dublin or London, and it feels more like home.”
Logistical Challenges
Director of Equipment Services Mike Parson faces unique complications. The team must account for every item through a carnet system. This includes “down to every screw, the count, the cost, the country of origin.”
“Taking on an international game is a huge logistical undertaking,” Parson noted. “You’re taking the whole operation and moving it overseas.”
The Dublin-to-London transition adds complexity. Equipment will travel by ferry between countries instead of flying back to Minnesota first.
Weather Preparations
The Vikings experienced varied conditions during last year’s London game. “We got all elements of the weather within three hours: the rain, the sun, the cold,” Parson recalled.
The team has prepared for multiple weather scenarios to ensure player comfort and performance.
Team Building Opportunity
O’Connell views the extended trip as beneficial for team chemistry. “You go on a little field trip for 10 days, you’ve got a great opportunity to keep growing together,” he said.
The coach appreciates the neutral site advantage compared to traditional road games in Pittsburgh or Cleveland.
Organizational Support
Director of Team Operations Paul Martin conducted advance visits to both venues. He met with stadium officials, medical facilities, transportation companies, and local establishments.
“This is a positive for us. We’re attacking it like it’s a positive for our team,” Martin emphasized. The organization views this challenge as an opportunity rather than a burden.
Hydration Focus
Individual hydration plans address dehydration from long flights. “Hydration is just one of the easiest things to overlook on a long trip,” Hawkins explained. “But also one of the fastest ways that performance can dip.”
Players will receive personalized hydration strategies to maintain peak performance levels.
International Success Record
The Vikings enter with confidence based on past international performance. Under O’Connell, they’re 2-0 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Their overall international record demonstrates consistent success away from home.
Setting New Standards
This unprecedented journey could establish new protocols for future international NFL games. The Vikings’ comprehensive approach may serve as a blueprint for other franchises.
Williams believes his organization is uniquely positioned for this challenge. “There’s no other better organization in my mind to do that,” he said about taking on the historic double header.
Final Preparations
The team practiced normally this week before departure. Friday will feature meetings and final practice in Dublin. Saturday offers a venue visit to establish familiarity with Croke Park.
O’Connell joked about his limited role in logistics. “It is a good thing he was not in charge of the travel logistics and orange slices,” noting his team’s expertise in complex operations.
