Spirit defender becomes the sixth different Washington player to earn weekly recognition this season after a stellar performance against league-leading Kansas City
Washington, D.C. – – U.S. Women’s National Team and Washington Spirit’s star defender Tara McKeown has been named the NWSL Player of the Week, presented by AT&T, following her commanding performance in last weekend’s shutout victory against the league-leading Kansas City Current.
The recognition marks another milestone in what has been a standout season for both McKeown and the Spirit organization, with the defender becoming the sixth different Washington player to earn the league’s weekly honor this season.
Defensive Masterclass Against Kansas City
McKeown’s Player of the Week selection comes after she anchored the Spirit’s defensive third in their historic clean sheet against Kansas City Current at CPKC Stadium. The performance helped Washington become just the second team to shut out the Current at their home venue since it opened before the 2024 season.
The shutout marked the Spirit’s seventh clean sheet of the regular season, showcasing the defensive consistency that has been a hallmark of their 2025 campaign. For McKeown, a 2024 Defender of the Year finalist, the performance reinforced her status as one of the NWSL’s premier center-backs.
International Excellence: A Cornerstone for Country
McKeown’s club success mirrors her exceptional contributions on the international stage, where she has established herself as a cornerstone of the United States Women’s National Team defense. Her commanding presence and tactical intelligence have made her an indispensable asset for the USWNT across multiple major tournaments and qualifying campaigns.
The defender’s international resume speaks to her world-class ability and leadership qualities. McKeown has consistently delivered clutch performances in high-pressure situations, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike for her composure under pressure and ability to organize the defensive line against the world’s elite attacking talents.
Her dual success at both club and international levels demonstrates the rare combination of technical skill, mental fortitude, and professional consistency that defines truly elite defenders. McKeown’s ability to seamlessly transition between NWSL competition and international duty has been instrumental in both the Spirit’s domestic success and the USWNT’s continued global dominance.
This latest Player of the Week honor adds another chapter to what has been a remarkable year for McKeown, who continues to prove that her impact extends far beyond individual accolades to team success at the highest levels of women’s soccer.
Spirit’s Award-Winning Season
McKeown joins an impressive list of Spirit teammates who have earned NWSL Player of the Week recognition this season. Ashley Hatch, Brittany Ratcliffe, Aubrey Kingsbury, Croix Bethune, and Trinity Rodman have all claimed the honor earlier in 2025, highlighting the depth and quality throughout Washington’s roster.
Remarkably, McKeown becomes the fifth Spirit player to win the award in the past ten match weeks, demonstrating the team’s consistent high-level performances as they push toward the playoffs.
Milestone Moment Awaits
Tonight’s match against Angel City FC in Los Angeles presents a special opportunity for the Southern California native. With any playing time in the 10:30 p.m. EDT kickoff on CBS Sports Network and Monumental+, McKeown will reach her 100th career regular-season appearance – a testament to her durability and importance to the Spirit organization.
The milestone would cap off a remarkable week for the defender, adding personal achievement to team success and individual recognition.
Looking Ahead
Following tonight’s West Coast clash, Washington will return home to Audi Field on Sunday, September 28, at 1 p.m. EDT to face the Houston Dash in the club’s annual Hispanic Heritage match. The homecoming will provide Spirit fans another opportunity to celebrate McKeown’s achievement and the team’s continued success.
