A brace from the former Man United-Aston Villa Striker in UEFA Champions League Action
Newcastle Upon Tyne, ENG- In the first match week of the brand new 2025/26 UEFA Champions League, Newcastle United had a tough task to face Spain’s FC Barcelona in their first match of the League Phase. But it was one man and one man alone who brought down the Newcastle all by himself, as the Catalan club won it by a final score of two goals to one.
Marcus Rashford snaps his first
Barcelona was attacking up the pitch as they were looking for the opening goal. Jules Kounde was on the far side of the pitch, but delivered a nice cross toward the middle of the area. Marcus Rashford delivered a tremendous snap header that went inside the near post in the 58th minute.
Rashford with Purpose
The second goal from Rashford was a smasher that no one saw coming. He received the ball at the near side while just outside the Newcastle area. He dribbled across to the far side, then unleashed a brilliant strike across his body and destroyed the net inside the back post for his second of the match in the 67th minute.
Newcastle pulled one back a bit too late
Newcastle was trying hard to get a goal to force some pressure; they did so inside the final minute before reaching second half stoppage time. Jacob Murphy received the ball along the near side, got toward the area, and delivered a nice cross to Anthony Gordon with a nice finish inside the far post in the 90th minute.
Newcastle had chances
Inside the first half, Newcastle United had several moments where they threatened to score, but couldn’t get one in the net due to not enough quality on the shots. When FC Barcelona survived the opening 45 minutes, they knew they could get a result. Even when Newcastle pulled one back, and seven minutes were posted on the 4th official’s board, it wasn’t enough to split the points.
